16/05/2014

We're proud and pumped to share news of two fab accolades: firstly, The Fifth Beatle has been chosen by The Library of Congress to present at The National Book Festival 2014-- hosted by President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama! And we've been nominated for the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Award for 2014: GREAT GRAPHIC NOVELS FOR TEENS! Also in this week's mix, we have an interview with Fifth Beatle writer / producer Vivek J. Tiwary 's alumni magazine, The Pennsylvania Gazette and an extended poem Vivek wrote for Cultural Weekly. Plus more Fifth Beatle Tour action: artist Andrew C. Robinson will be appearing May 17/18 at Big Wow ComicFest in San Jose CA , and Vivek will be speaking in NYC, May 21, at the Wharton Club of New York.

Library of Congress NATIONAL BOOK FESTIVAL: The Fifth Beatle creative team-- writer Vivek J. Tiwary & artists Andrew Cartwright Robinson & Kyle Baker-- have been selected to present at the 14th annual The Library of Congress NATIONAL BOOK FESTIVAL, chaired by President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, August 30, 2014 at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C.. The Fifth Beatle team is one of only 100 author teams (of any category-- not just graphic novels) chosen to present! They  will be giving a 30-minute presentation followed by a book signing. The festival is free and open to the public.

Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) Award for 2014 GREAT GRAPHIC NOVELS FOR TEENS: From Vivek: "I learned to love literature from my parents-- and from the head librarian at Grace Church School. Today I keep a few copies of The Fifth Beatle in my car and whenever I pass a library, I drop in and donate one. So it's with particular pride I learned The Fifth Beatle is nominated for the YALSA Award for 2014 GREAT GRAPHIC NOVELS FOR TEENS. Thanks to all the libraries and librarians who make sure our kids love literature!"

Vivek Tiwary

Pennsylvania Gazette interview with Vivek:  "...Tiwary often wondered what it took to manage a band, particularly his favorite band, the Beatles. Brian Epstein—who had been managing his family’s record store in Liverpool when he first saw the band perform in 1961—piqued Tiwary’s interest, partly because Epstein didn’t fit into society at the time, and Tiwary sometimes felt the same way. Tiwary was an Indian-American kid in a world where people from his background usually studied medicine and science. Epstein was gay in a county where homosexuality was a felony, and Jewish in the British music industry when, according to Tiwary, it had relatively few Jews....

Poem: They say it's Vivek's birthday (it was yesterday!) In his honor, feast on this fab poem, "What is Culture," that he wrote for Cultural Weekly; excerpt:
...It’s the laughter of your children—the joy they bring, the sleep they steal, the passions they discover and those they allow you to revisit… even when you think you’re too old for that stuff.

It’s learning that you’re never too old.

It’s both The Firebird and the Muppets....

As always, thanks for the support!

The Fifth Beatle Team
