FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Around the world, a statue has become one of the ultimate accolades afforded to individuals,
groups or even animals who have made a significant contribution, added value or created a
legacy that was worthy of the attention to the community or even in some cases the wider
world.
Cities, towns and villages all across the globe are populated with these works of art taking
centre stage in prominent positions.
Many statues around the world celebrate and remember individuals from the local area; in
Edinburgh’s Princess Street Gardens, a statue is erected of Allan Ramsay the playwright,
publisher, librarian and wig-maker, in Detroit Frank Murphy, the Governor, judge, justice,
U.S. Attorney General, Detroit mayor, Philippines high commissioner.
Other Statues celebrate the contributions individuals have made who hark far away from
their lasting memorial;
In New York City on the corner of 112th Street and Riverside Drive a statue of Lajos
Kossuth the Hungarian Revolutionary and President of Hungary is erected to celebrate this
“champion of liberty”., in Charing Cross, London, the Irish writer and poet has his memory
preserved proudly far from the green fields of his native land.
So it may seem, that it doesn’t really matter where your statue is - yes it would be nice to
have your lasting tribute displayed prominently in your home town or village for your
ancestors to proudly cherish – the point is that if you have done something extraordinary,
you will be remembered in this way somewhere, somehow, sometime.
Or maybe not.
What do people think of when they think of Liverpool? Maybe it is Liverpool Ship Building
history that springs to mind or possibly the cities pioneering of municipal trams. You may
shout immediately that Liverpool founded the UK's first Underwriters' Association and the
first Institute of Accountants. Who can forget that Ship-owner Sir Alfred Lewis
Jones introduced the banana to Great Britain via Liverpool in 1884.
I would hazard a guess however; that the answer given by many or dare I say the vast
majority of people when asked this question would be that The Beatles came from Liverpool.
Of course Liverpool and many other cities around the world has its tribute to John Paul
George and Ringo. But what of the man who discovered them? What of the man who
convinced EMI record producer George Martin to give them a record deal despite his
reservations? What of the man described by Paul McCartney as “The Fifth Beatle”?
What of Brian Epstein and his statue?
If you Google, “Brian Epstein Statue”, you may be surprised to discover that no statue of
Brian Samuel Epstein has been erected anywhere in the world – even in Liverpool. In 2007, David Charters of the Liverpool Daily Post reported that “The Beatles could be
worth £1bn-a-year to Liverpool’s economy”. In the same article Jerry Goldman, the 60-yearold director of the Beatles Story museum and shop on Liverpool’s Albert Dock was quotes as
saying that “I would say that direct Beatles’ tourism is worth £200m, but the wider figure is
between £500m and a billion pounds”
So with the old saying “better late than never” in mind it is perhaps long overdue that a core
of Brian Epstein friends and fans in his native Liverpool has mustered the initiative and
strength to correct this oversight.
A charity has been established which will serve two purposes in this initiative. It will embark
upon a campaign of fundraising to generate the £60,000 required to bring Brian Epstein’s
image into statue form and secondly it will collect and administer the funds in conjunction
with Liverpool City Council who has passed full planning permission for the statue.
The location for the monument is the Epstein family home (now a Hotel) in Liverpool.
One time Beatles promoter and friend of Brian Epstein Sam Leach commented “Brian
Epstein fully deserves to have a Statue honouring him. He took the Beatles to national and
world-wide fame and, despite their obvious talent; they may not have made it without him.
With his urbane, dignified manner Brian opened doors that had previously been slammed in
my face."
The campaign has the backing of some very high profile backers with Billy J Kramer and
Gerry Marsden lending their support as patrons of the Charity.
The statue is being created by sculptor Tom Murphy who was responsible for the striking
representation of John Lennon in the airport named after him in Liverpool.
Fundraising has now commenced with a series of events in the pipeline for the coming
weeks and months.
Rodger Meachem who is heading up the Charity remarked, “in this difficult economic
climate, we know that it will be difficult to raise such a large amount of money but we will do
all we can to remind the world of Brian Epstein’s incredible contribution to the world. I mean,
how can we overlook the man who brought us the Beatles”.
