Today marks the 60th anniversary of the UK official singles chart. Originally compiled by sales of sheet music, the chart began when the NME took a leaf out of Billboard’s book - who had been publishing charts based on sales since 1940 - and published the first sales-based UK chart in November 1962.
In the 60 years since the chart's inception music fans have bought around 3.7 billion singles, it has been topped by over 1,200 songs and is still considered a standard bearer amongst the UK public and music industry. Out of the 1,200 number 1 singles Paul has been confirmed by Music Week as the artist with the most by any single performer with an impressive 24 during his career. Paul has also been involved in the top-selling single of the decade three times.
