New 'Sgt. Pepper' Cover Created for Artist's 80th Birthday
Updated version includes images of David Bowie, Elvis Costello, Elton John, Eric Clapton and more
APRIL 3, 2012
Sir Peter Blake, the artist who created the iconic cover for The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, has created a new version of the cover to celebrate his 80th birthday. The new artwork, which has been posted on the Guardian's website, includes many new faces, such as Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling, Amy Winehouse, Noel Gallagher, Elton John, Elvis Costello, Eric Clapton, David Bowie and Ian Curtis. The new artwork was created for a Blake retrospective at Wayne Hemingway's Vintage festival in Northamptonshire, England in July.
"I've chosen people I admire, great people and some who are dear friends," Blake told the Guardian. "I had a very long list of people who I wanted to go in but couldn't fit everyone in – I think that shows how strong British culture and its legacy of the last six decades is."
