Kent Meredith, director of the United Supermarkets Arena in Lubbock, was outside informing the masses in line at the arena that earlier storms in the San Antonio area Thursday had temporarily grounded Paul McCartney's jet.

McCartney's delayed arrival at the arena would cause a 50-minute delay in the beginning of his long-awaited concert Thursday night at Lubbock's sold out United Supermarkets Arena.

However, according to Meredith, McCartney promised in advance that he would perform his entire show.

And he did -- a three-hour, 40-song concert that included 25 Beatles songs, six Wings songs, eight songs from McCartney's solo albums (including four from "New") and, it being Lubbock, one tune by Buddy Holly and the Crickets.

Paul McCartney made a memorable Lubbock debut Thursday night in the United Supermarkets Arena as thousands of fans cheered for the former Beatles member.
Doors opened to the concert at 7 p.m., and McCartney was scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. The 72-year-old musician arrived on stage close to 9 p.m. and performed for nearly three hours after opening the show with "Eights Days a Week."
“You don’t know how exciting it is for me to be here,” McCartney said.
Buddy Holly inspired McCartney and band mate John Lennon when they were teenagers, McCartney said, so he wanted to stop in Lubbock during his Out There tour to pay homage to the late rock ‘n’ roll artist.
Performing in Lubbock fulfilled a lifelong dream, McCartney said.
Prior to the concert, Cindy Harper, associate director of marketing and booking for the United Supermarkets Arena, said arena officials expected the concert to sell out.
“It’s incredible to have someone of the magnitude of Paul McCartney to come anywhere to any venue,” she said, “but here in Lubbock we’re just so super excited to have him on the Texas Tech property. It’s just going to be amazing to have him come to Texas Tech.”
McCartney was originally scheduled to play in Lubbock on June 14, according to his website, but the concert was rescheduled due to illness.
