Yellow submarine model stolen from outside Liverpool church
THIEVES stole a huge model of The Beatles’ iconic yellow submarine from outside a Liverpool church.
Fab Four fans from St Barnabas Church in Penny Lane were left upset after the wooden sub was taken.
The churchgoers today appealed for it to be returned after it went missing during their Beatles celebrations.
David Dundas, who is a long-standing member of the congregation, said: “It’s very heavy. It was made with love and care by the church warden and a couple of the lads in maintenance a few years ago.
“We have a Beatles festival to coincide with the Mathew Street Festival.
“Last year the yellow submarine took pride of place in our church gardens. “This year we put it in front of the church to block out an unsightly builder’s skip.
“We locked up after a history talk on the Saturday night and all went home.
“The next day it was gone. It is very big and it was tied on to the railings so it would have taken at least a couple of people to take it.
“It is special to the church because of our connection with The Beatles. Paul McCartney was a choir boy here and he was the best man when his brother Mike got married in the church, and of course with it being on Penny Lane.”
But David said they will not allow the loss to impact on their next event, a local history talk and fish and chip supper on Saturday.
Police confirmed they are investigating the theft
