Over the years, it has been trodden on by millions of passengers - including royalty and celebrities.

But now, after nearly a decade, the Capital of Culture ‘08 carpet at Liverpool John Lennon airport (JLA) is finally being ripped out and replaced.

The increasingly worn-down carpet has been the subject of much comment by regular airport users, especially as it relates to an event which happened eight years ago.

The first phase of the replacement is taking place in the domestic arrivals walkways, and will be followed by the international arrivals area and the departure lounge.

The old carpet will be replaced by a mixture of tiling and hard-wearing rubberised flooring, with the work taking around three months to complete.

JLA spokesman Robin Tudor said: “The ‘08 carpet was part of a lot of branding that went into the airport to make it a welcoming gateway.

“But the 08 logos do have the effect of highlighting the age of the carpet, and that branding has now seen its day.

“It had become a bit of a standing joke among the travelling public and one of our key aims had been to remove the carpets and replace them with new flooring which will stand the test of time.

“We’re thinking of framing some of the ‘08 logo carpets and raffling them off to charity.”

It is estimated that around 40m passengers have trodden on the ‘08 carpet at some point in their journey through the airport.
