Rush, Fleetwood Mac and Paul McCartney Lead Ultimate Classic Rock Awards
by Matthew Wilkening
January 23, 2014

With two weeks of voting down and three still to go, Rush, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath and Paul McCartney have taken early leads in various categories of the 2014 Ultimate Classic Rock Awards.
Of course, with fans of all these popular acts free to vote once an hour from now until February 11, there’s plenty of time for the rankings to change. But so far, Rush are lined up to be the big winners, sitting in first place in three categories and second place in another. All four of these honors are tied to their acclaimed ‘Clockwork Angels’ tour, which leads in the Tour of the Year competition as well as DVD and Live Album of the Year. In addition, ‘The Garden,’ which originally was released on 2012′s ‘Clockwork Angels’ album but got its own Record Store Day release last year, is up for Song of the Year.
Paul McCartney and Black Sabbath are currently dueling for both Artist and Album of the Year, with the former Beatle lined up for the former honor and Sabbath’s ’13′ in the pole position for the year’s best record. Here’s the full list of frontrunners:

Artist of the Year – Paul McCartney (in second, Black Sabbath)
Album of the Year — Black Sabbath, ’13′ (in second, Paul McCartney, ‘New’)
Tour of the Year — Rush (in second, Fleetwood Mac)
Best Reissue or Archival Release — Fleetwood Mac, ‘Rumours: Deluxe Edition (in second, The Who, ‘Tommy: Super Deluxe Box’)
Live Album — Rush, ‘Clockwork Angels Tour’ (in second, the Beatles, ‘Live at the BBC Vol. 2′)
Song of the Year — Rush, ‘The Garden’ (in second, Paul McCartney, ‘Queenie Eye’)
DVD of the Year — Aerosmith, ‘Rock for the Rising Sun’ (in second, Rush, ‘Clockwork Angels Tour’)
Commercial of the Year — Led Zeppelin, ‘American Hustle’ (in second, Fleetwood Mac, Budweiser)

The nominees for the 2014 Ultimate Classic Rock Awards were selected by the editors and writers of UCR. Be sure to cast your vote (at least once per hour, if you wish) in the polls before they close on February 11 at 10AM ET.

Meet the Beatles: "Alley Cats in Agony"

Meet the Beatles: "Alley Cats in Agony"
ByBILL CRANDALL
CBS NEWS
January 22, 2014

This is part of a series of essays to mark the 50th anniversary of the Beatles' first American television appearance on CBS's "The Ed Sullivan Show." It culminates with CBS News, 50 Years Later...The Beatles at The Ed Sullivan Theater: Presented by Motown The Musical, a live, interactive multimedia event at The Ed Sullivan Theater on Feb. 9.

America's steaming cauldron of social-media soup, filled with spicy bits of Miley, Kanye and Gaga, gets the blame for devolving our national conversation. Before that, the argument goes, we were a nation of polite, eloquent popular-culture connoisseurs ... and we all loved the Beatles.

Well, the Beatles may have first waved to America from the steps of Pan Am Flight 101, but not everyone at JFK Airport on Feb. 7, 1964, waved back. Amid the ecstatic screams, CBS News captured shouts of "They're phonies," and "We want Elvis!" There were also political protests -- one sign read, "England Get Out of Ireland." Another vocal bystander saw the Beatles as a threat to the American economy. "They're taking money out of America and bringing it back to England," he said. "We need money over here."

Journalists joined in. At the JFK press conference, one reporter informed the band that a group was hawking stickers, "Stamp Out the Beatles." After their first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show," in another press conference, the Beatles were subjected to readings of the most critical parts of a review in the New York Herald Tribune.

The Tribune declared the Beatles "75 percent publicity, 20 percent haircut and 5 percent lilting lament," while the the New York Times dismissed the Beatles as derivative, "Multiply Elvis Presley by four, subtract six years from his age, add British accents and a sharp sense of humor. The answer: It's the Beatles (Yeah, Yeah, Yeah)."

And those were tame compared to Newsweek: "Visually, they are a nightmare: tight, dandified Edwardian beatnik suits and great pudding bowls of hair. Musically, they are near disaster: guitars and drums slamming out a merciless beat that does away with secondary rhythms, harmony and melody."

By Feb. 11, when the Beatles arrived in our nation's capital, the media reception grew chillier. The Washington Post called them "imported hillbillies who looked like sheepdogs and sounded like alley cats in agony."

And when the Beatles stepped up to the mic for their Washington Coliseum press conference, the moderator sniped, "Here I am surrounded by the Beatles, and I don't feel a thing."

He glibly asked, "Fellas, how does it feel to be in the United States?" Ringo replied, "It's great. Wonderful," while Paul McCartney and George chimed in diplomatically, "Very nice."

When he followed up with what they liked best about America, John couldn't resist: "You!"

Maybe this is why Miley sticks her tongue out.

FIFTH BEATLE gets 10/10 review in IGN.com and "IGN's Best Graphic Novel of 2013"
"Writer Vivek J. Tiwary successfully captured the turmoil and triumphs of Epstein’s too-brief life, while artists Andrew Cartwright Robinson and Kyle Baker produced artwork worthy of the Beatles. All this is a handsomely crafted hardcover for only $20? [*only $15.32 at Amazon] How could it not be the best of the year?"

Vivek Tiwary in US News & World Report:  "When they came to the United States, it was at a period where JFK had just been assassinated and the world was in turmoil. He [Epstein] saw in the band a global message of love, that if packaged properly would be embraced everywhere. Certainly it was, but when it came to the U.S., it was particularly needed. The U.S. needed some comfort and love and that’s what the Beatles represented.”

"Heartbreaking, exhilarating and unexpected no matter your love of Beatles lore, The Fifth Beatle is a complete triumph." -- The Hollywood Reporter picks Fifth Beatle as one of its "Top Comics of 2013"

Yoko Ono speaks out against Japan's dolphin hunting

Caroline Kennedy, Yoko Ono Speak Out Against Japan's Dolphin Cull in Taiji Cove
By James A. Foley
Jan 20, 2014

The US Ambassador to Japan and Yoko Ono, the wife of legendary Beatles frontman John Lennon, have added their names to the growing list of high-profile opposition to Japan's annual dolphin cull in the rural town of Taiji.
Friday, Ambassador Caroline Kennedy said in a tweet that the US government opposed the annual "drive hunt" and that she is concerned about the issue.
"Deeply concerned by inhumaneness of drive hunt dolphin killing," Kennedy wrote. "USG opposes drive hunt fisheries."

Of the more than 250 dolphins captured in a cove in Taiji, Japan across the last four days, 41 were killed and 52 were taken captive, according to a report by the Cove Guardians, an activist group affiliated with the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. A drive hunt refers to the practice of corralling dolphins into a cove or otherwise inescapable area, where they can be trapped or killed.
Japan's whaling and dolphin-hunting programs have long been a controversial subject, and the nation frequently faces criticism for the practice. Japan, however, claims that hunting marine mammals is part of its cultural heritage.
Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters Monday that the Taiji dolphin cull was done in accordance with Japanese laws.
"Dolphin fishing is a form of traditional fishing in our country," he said, according to The Associate Press, which reported he was responding to a question about Kennedy's criticism. "We will explain Japan's position to the American side."
Known for her work as an artist and peace activist, Ono, who was born in Tokyo, said the annual dolphin-hunt - which was brought to worldwide attention in the 2009 Academy Award-winning documentary "The Cove" - provides an opportunity for other nations to speak ill of Japan.
"I am sure that it is not easy, but please consider the safety of the future of Japan, surrounded by many powerful countries which are always looking for the chance to weaken the power of our country," Ono said in an open letter published on her website.
"At this very politically sensitive time, [the hunt] will make the children of the world hate the Japanese," she said.
Since it was published Monday, Ono's letter has spread across the Internet and drawn praise, including that of eco-activist Paul Watson, who is founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society.
The conservation group, viewed by some as radical, is in opposition to the hunt and first reported that last weekend more than 250 dolphins, including a rare albino dolphin calf, were herded into Taiji's cove, where the prettiest of the lot would be taken and sold to aquariums and many of the others killed for meat.
In a blog post Sunday, Watson said, "Capturing dolphins for display in aquariums is not part of Japanese culture and the brutality of this slaughter would never be legally accepted in any abattoir in the world including Japan."
Watson said dolphins are highly-intelligent, complex animals and that there is no moral or cultural justification for killing them now that we know as much about them as we do now.
"In the name of human decency and for the sake of all future generations this shameful crime against nature and humanity must end," he said.

Dolphins

TO THE JAPANESE FISHERMAN OF TAIJI
FROM YOKO ONO LENNON, 20 JANUARY 2014.
Dear Japanese Fishermen of Taiji,
I understand how you must feel about the one-sided-ness of the West to be angry at your traditional capture and slaughter of Dolphins. But that tradition was made only when the world, and Japanese Fishermen did not know what it meant to do harm to the Dolphins. I’m sure you have heard so many speeches in which all of these things have been discussed. So I will not bore you with it.
But I think you should think of this situation from the point-of-view of the big picture. Japan has gone through such hard times lately. And we need the sympathy and help of the rest of the world. It will give an excuse for big countries and their children in China, India and Russia to speak ill of Japan when we should be communicating our strong love for peace, not violence.
I am sure that it is not easy, but please consider the safety of the future of Japan, surrounded by many powerful countries which are always looking for the chance to weaken the power of our country. The future of Japan and its safety depends on many situations, but what you do with Dolphins now can create a very bad relationship with the whole world.
The way you are insisting on a big celebration of killing so many Dolphins and kidnapping some of them to sell to the zoos and restaurants at this very politically sensitive time, will make the children of the world hate the Japanese.
For many, many years and decades we have worked hard to receive true understanding of the Japanese from the world. And, because of our effort, Japan is now respected as a country of good power and ingenuity. This did not happen without our efforts of many decades.
But what we enjoy now, can be destroyed literally in one day. I beg of you to consider our precarious situation after the nuclear disaster (which could very well effect the rest of the world, as well).
Please use political tact and cancel the festival which will be considered by the rest of the world as a sign of Japanese arrogance, ignorance, and love for an act of violence.
Thank you.

Ringo Starr Honored by David Lynch Foundation Ahead of the GRAMMYs

Ringo Starr Honored by David Lynch Foundation Ahead of the GRAMMYs
By Associated Press
January 21, 2014

Ringo Starr got an early start to Grammy week, with famous friends honoring him for his life and work.

The former Beatle received the Lifetime of Peace and Love award from the David Lynch Foundation on Monday night during a tribute concert at the El Rey Theatre in Los Angeles.

In turn, Starr led the crowd in singing happy birthday to Lynch, the director known for "Blue Velvet" and "Mulholland Drive," who was celebrating his 68th birthday.

Paul McCartney and Yoko Ono expressed their love for Starr via videos, while George Harrison's widow, Olivia, was in the crowd. Starr and McCartney will perform separately at Sunday's Grammy Awards.

"It's a weird place to be this evening," Starr said onstage. "All this praise is overwhelming really. It's really great to look out and see all these people I recognize and three of them are meditating."

Lynch's foundation helps provide scholarships to teach transcendental meditation — a practice the Beatles dabbled in — to at-risk youth, veterans and domestic violence victims.

"Everybody loves Ringo," Lynch said. "Not just because he's a Beatle, not just because he's one of the tastiest drummers ever, but because he radiates that peace and love."

Don Was served as musical director for the all-star house band that included Peter Frampton, drummer Kenny Aronoff, former Toto guitarist Steve Lukather and keyboardist Benmont Tench of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

"It's a great little band," Starr said. "I know them all personally."

Jesse Elliott and Lindsay Giles of Ark Life kicked off the show with a duet of "Can't Do It Wrong." The Head and the Heart paid homage to the Beatles on "Octopus's Garden" before Brendan Benson sang "Don't Go Where the Road Don't Go." Starr watched from the audience, bobbing his head to the beat.

Bettye LaVette offered up a soulful take on "It Don't Come Easy" after noting her 50th anniversary in the music business. "This is the baddest band I've had in the entire 50 years," she said.

Ben Folds tore through "Oh My My," resembling a mad scientist as he pounded the electric keyboard.

"It's very rare I play an ironing board for you, and it's only for Ringo and David," Folds joked.

Ben Harper slowed things down on "Walk With You," before turning the stage over to Joe Walsh, who took a break from the Eagles' run of shows reopening the Forum to jam for his brother-in-law. Walsh's wife, Marjorie, is the sister of Starr's wife, Barbara Bach.

"I'm gonna cheat," Walsh cracked, with the lyrics to "Back Off Boogaloo" propped on a stand in front of him.

By then, Starr had left his seat to head backstage, dancing in the wings as Walsh showed off his guitar licks.

"I've written these songs, but I've never heard them like that," Starr said as he took the stage for the finale.

He launched into his hit "Photograph," then got behind the drums for "Boys."

"I have to play something from the drums so you can see I can still hold the sticks," he joked.

Starr closed the show by taking the lead on "With a Little Help from My Friends," joined onstage by Jim Carrey, Sheila E. and Edgar Winter as the crowd got on its feet for the sing-along.
