Book Review: ‘Rubber Soul’ by Greg Kihn

Book Review: ‘Rubber Soul’ by Greg Kihn
SEPTEMBER 18, 2013

Well boys and girls, it’s time once again for a couple disclaimers before I break into my review of this book:

1. This was the first full length book that I read entirely on a Kindle.  I like real books with paper pages and page numbers, so this alone was a challenge when all the Kindle would tell me was a percentage of what I had already read.  Is this going to be a factor in my review?  I dunno!

2. I’ve said it before…I don’t like fan fiction.  BUT…I had to catch myself because I realized that I do read fan fiction about Edgar Alan Poe.  In fact, I’m kinda obsessed with it!  So let me correct myself, I don’t like Beatles fan fiction.  I like my Fab Four the way I like my soap and men…99 44/100% pure!

On to the review:

Rubber Soul is the latest in a series of novels by Greg Kihn.  Yeah…THAT Greg Kihn…the man behind ‘The Breakup Song’ and ‘Jeopardy’.  Apparently, he’s been keeping himself busy these past several years with a radio show and authoring books.  Who’d a thunk it?  This latest installment is a murder mystery featuring …you guessed it…The Beatles!

I must say that I love Greg’s writing style!  What an easy and peaceful read this book was even as I struggled to get used to reading it on my Kindle (or KIHNdle).  No flashbacks and not overloaded with too many characters.  But I will admit, I almost didn’t make it past the 2nd or 3rd chapter when the main character becomes, what I consider, a little too involved with The Beatles.  I understand that Mr. Kihn stayed true to the Beatles story during their early years, but there was a moment where I felt he crossed the line a bit with mixing his fiction with his fact.

*Note: I have it from a good source that Greg Kihn had never heard of ‘fan fiction’ up until 2 months ago even though he’s been writing it for years.  Go figure…

I finally picked the book back up after a couple days of questioning why I had decided to read another Beatles fan fiction book (because he’s Greg ‘fu-kihn’ KIHN…that’s why!), I marched on through the digital pages and can say that it became a much better read with the Beatles taking a back seat to the main character up until the end when the plot thickens and draws our boys back into the story.  At this point, I could no longer put the book down until finding out ‘Who done it?’

I must say, Greg did his homework on the Beatles for this book.  I do believe there is one obvious error when he writes that Stu and Astrid were married…they never got that far before Stu passed away.

I rate this book: 3 out of 4 Beetles

RUBBER SOUL (EBOOK EXCERPT)

About
Greg Kihn continues to pioneer the rock thriller genre with Rubber Soul, a murder mystery and an action packed ride through Beatlemania, featuring The Beatles themselves.

Dust Bin Bob runs a second hand shop at the Flea Market on Penny Lane. He has an extensive collection of American R&B singles that he gets from Merchant Marines returning from Baltimore and New York. The action starts when he befriends four lads from Liverpool by the names of John, Paul, George and Ringo and becomes their lifelong friend, sharing the vinyl that will start a revolution.

From then on, it’s a rocket ride from The Beatles earliest days in Liverpool to six shows a night in Hamburg to the Cavern Club to The Ed Sullivan Show and full- fledged Beatlemania.

Along the way, Dust Bin thwarts a plot by Marcos loyalists to assassinate the Beatles in Manila after they snub the Marcos family, blowing off a reception at the palace and narrowly avoiding an international incident. It could have happened!

NBC called Greg Kihn “Rock’s True Renaissance Man.” His career stretches from the dawn of punk and indie rock to the discos of the 80’s to the glory days of MTV. As a pioneer with the legendary Beserkley Records, he helped write the book on revolutionary west coast rock and roll, toured the world, appeared on Saturday Night Live and American Bandstand, opened for the Rolling Stones, jammed with Bruce Springsteen, and won awards for his worldwide #1 hit Jeopardy and The Break-Up Song, famously parodied by Weird Al Yankovic.

About the Author
Greg Kihn is the author of four previous novels including Horror Show, nominated for the Bram Stoker Award for Best First Novel. In the 90’s, Kihn started a radio career and spent sixteen years hosting the top-rated morning show for KFOX radio in San Francisco. He was inducted into the San Jose Rock Hall Of Fame in 2008 and the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame in 2012.

The idea for Rubber Soul originated with Greg’s interviews with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Patti Harrison, Yoko Ono and drummer Pete Best. The historical details are 100% accurate. When he asked where the Beatles found the rare American R&B 45’s that constituted their early repertoire, Best revealed that it was from Merchant Marines who carried the records back to Liverpool from America. From there came the fictional Dust Bin Bob, a character who befriends the Beatles from their penniless early days and saves them from an assassination attempt in the Philippines during their world tour in 1966. After a lifetime of rock & roll, and decades on the road and behind the microphone, no one else but Greg Kihn could have written this story.

One thing I've noticed in what's become my scholarly study on The Beatles is that one can find a wealth of information on the band, the individual members, and their chronological history. I may know more about John Lennon than I do my current president, and yet information on their manager, Brian Epstein, remains scarce. Pretty much everything I know about Epstein came from Peter Brown's memoir, The Love You Make. I know I tend to hold up that book as the standard, but years and years after I've read it, the memory is fresh.

There are Epstein-centric books, though, none of which I have read: among them a ghostwritten autobiography published at the height of Beatlemania that is likely whitewashed to appeal to young fans, and a more in-depth history from Lennon biographer Ray Coleman. One could guess the lack in reading material about Epstein corresponds to the short time he worked with the band and the fact he died so young. I see pictures of Epstein and imagine a man beyond his years - always mature and serious - when in fact he was only six years older than John.

We can imagine the stress of managing an extremely popular group aged him prematurely. Not only that, Epstein dealt with social prejudices that rendered him depressed and unable to sleep. A public figure comes out as homosexual today and it may not be a big deal, but in 1962 to be gay and Jewish in a tiny English port town equated to painting a large target on your head. The Fifth Beatle, a new graphic novel fictionalizing the life of Epstein, opens with the grim image of Epstein suffering a violent act in what appears to be a hustle gone wrong in a dank Liverpool alley. It's a specter of shame and unrequited feelings that follow him through his short life, terrors he seeks to replace with success.

Fans know the legend - Epstein had little to no talent management experience, but knew the music business through the family chain of record shops. He attends a live show at the Cavern after hearing of the Beatles, and you know the rest. The Fifth Beatle vividly recreates this and other key scenes in Epstein's relationship with The Beatles with sharp characterization and moody colors. Unlike another graphic novel reviewed here (Baby in Black), representations of main and supporting players take on appearances that match their personalities - genuine and assumed. Brian comes off as enthusiastic despite weary expressions, John is sharp and smirking, and Paul exudes a gee-whiz cuteness. Darker scenes position people like Colonel Tom Parker in a demonic setting and Ed Sullivan as wooden (you'll see it soon enough), and Yoko Ono in an eerie cameo.

All through the adventure, Brian has a right-hand woman named Moxie. Whether she existed as a composite of personnel assisting the band and Epstein or as a figment of the imagination (not unlike Jessica Lange's angel/confessor in All That Jazz) remains up for debate. Her role in the story serves to heighten one thing we've always known about Brian Epstein - he was lonely. He had friends and family, and while he may not have been the savviest of managers he had the respect of four lads from Liverpool for a time. Nonetheless, he had no partner with whom to share his success, and that knowledge make this story all the more bittersweet. His premature death in 1967 is arguably the beginning of the end of The Beatles - that's something I've believed for a long time. We can blame Yoko, but the smoke ignited when the band found themselves without management and couldn't easily decide on a successor.

Anyway, I've followed the progress of The Fifth Beatle for the better part of a year and looked forward to reading it. Overall, I liked the story and the illustration. Fans will easily spot the lyrical Easter eggs in the dialogue, but I find things like that take me out of the story and make it a challenge to take it seriously (Clockwork Angels had this same issue). I will admit, too, there are known scenes of Epstein's life that didn't make it to this book. George is barely represented here, Ringo even less, and Pete Best isn't on the radar...unless you count blurred background Cavern images. Also missing or downplayed are moments of John's cruel humor, anti-Semitic and anti-gay slurs that reportedly drove Epstein to tears.

The Fifth Beatle is a welcome tribute to a figure sometimes marginalized in Beatles history. Petitions to get Epstein inducted as a non-performer in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame continue to circulate, and perhaps a book like this will bring more attention to the cause.

Paul McCartney to shut down Hollywood Blvd. for free concert

Timberlake and McCartney for free? Jimmy Kimmel can hook you up
By Patrick Kevin Day
September 17, 2013

The production crew of "Jimmy Kimmel Live" is planning to shut down part of Hollywood Boulevard for two nights next week, but before you get too up in arms about the traffic inconvenience, know that they have a really good reason to do it.

How do free concerts by Justin Timberlake and Paul McCartney sound?

Kimmel's show will close down a quarter-mile stretch of Hollywood Boulevard from Highland Avenue to Sycamore Avenue outside the studio where the late night show is taped on Monday, Sept. 23, and Tuesday, Sept. 24. But the closure isn't part of some private Hollywood shindig (that'll be the  Oscars early next year). Instead, the street closure is in anticipation of the crowds who plan to show up for the free concerts put on by two of the biggest names in music.

McCartney will be first on Monday, with the standard Kimmel couch interview followed by the performance. Timberlake will follow on Tuesday evening. Both shows will take place during the standard Kimmel show taping time, around 4:30 p.m.

Tickets to the shows are available through the website: www.JKLTickets.com.

Of course, those who just want to head home early to avoid the Hollywood traffic nightmare can watch the shows streaming on the "Jimmy Kimmel Live" MySpace page.

Published: Sept. 17, 2013

LOS ANGELES, Sept. 17 (UPI) -- "Jimmy Kimmel Live" is closing down part of Hollywood Boulevard for two consecutive nights so Paul McCartney and Justin Timberlake can perform, ABC said.

McCartney will join Kimmel in his Los Angeles television studio for an interview Monday, then perform a free concert outside for the waiting masses.

The following night, Timberlake will sing songs from his new album, "The 20/20 Experience -- 2 of 2," which hits stores Sept. 30. Timberlake will also chat with Kimmel about his role in the new movie "Runner Runner," which opens in theaters Oct. 4.

"This unprecedented two-night affair is a free concert experience in the heart of Hollywood," ABC said in a release Tuesday. "Streets will be closed and traffic will be diverted in an effort to contain the anticipated crowds. 'JKL' will close down a quarter-mile of Hollywood Boulevard from Highland Avenue to Sycamore Avenue in order to accommodate as many fans as possible."

Watch The Beatles' Feature Film Ahead Of BBC Rarities Album Release [Video]
by Lauren James
17 September 2013

The new album from The Beatles will be an exciting addition to any fan's collection.

A new video has been released to promote The Beatles' upcoming album release showcasing songs that the Liverpudlian band performed in session with the BBC. Entitled, On Air - Live At The BBC Volume 2, the new record will comprise of a 63 track, 2 disc album featuring a "48 page booklet with rare photos and introduction by Paul McCartney" as well as 37 unreleased performances and 23 excerpts of solid studio banter.

The Beatles
A New Album Of The Beatles Recordings Will Be Released.

On Air... will reportedly also include 10 previously unheard songs that the band played together but did not record with their record label, EMI, including their cover of Chuck Berry's 'I'm Talking About You' and the 19th century, oft covered 'Beautiful Dreamer,' according to The Independent.

Watch The Featurette Ad:

Though it seems like a large offering of music from the band, the 63 tracks selected for the new album have been selected from the 275 unique musical performances The Beatles played for the BBC between March 1962 and June 1965.

The Beatles Band
The Album Will Feature 37 Unheard Recordings & 10 Unrecorded Songs.

True Beatles fans will value the addition of the famous four-piece's studio banter. The group were known for their wit and sense of humour and the new speech excerpts will offer a new window into the inter-band relationships and BBC-based tomfoolery with radio hosts Brian Matthew and Alan Freeman. Due on release in November this year, the new record will serve as the sequel to 1994's Live At The BBC that sold 5 million copies.

Sir Paul McCartney has spoken about the imminent release and the importance of the recordings, saying "There's a lot of energy and spirit. We are going for it, not holding back at all, trying to put in the best performance of our lifetimes."

The Beatles BBC
The Beatles Held The BBC In High Esteem.

McCartney also spoke warmly of the BBC and the significance the broadcaster held for his band: "We'd been raised on the BBC radio programmes. One of the big things in our week was Saturday Club - this great show was playing the kind of music we loved, so that was something we really aspired to."
The release will be available in a special 180-gram vinyl package with a 48-page booklet as well as on CD and download.

McCartney 'New' news: Taking it to the streets; Best Buy, Walmart exclusives

McCartney 'New' news: Taking it to the streets; Best Buy, Walmart exclusives
Steve Marinucci
Beatles Examiner
September 15, 2013

Paul McCartney fans on the streets of New York are seeing a familiar sight – the logo for McCartney's “New” album on sidewalks, New York Rock Culture Examiner Jeff Slate told us Sept. 14. It goes along with the social media promotion being used for “New.”
This might have something to do with what was posted on the McCartney website: “Seeing as the new album will be called 'NEW', I am inviting you all to post your pictures to Instagram using the hashtag #whatsnewpaul anytime you see the word new on the street or in a magazine or wherever. To start the ball rolling I've done a couple myself which you can check out below, and I look forward to seeing the most inventive ones that you send in. Cheers Paul.”

There hasn't been a lot of responses on Instagram just yet.

ANOTHER “NEW” VERSION:
There are no details as to what it will be “exclusive” about it, but Best Buy is listing an “exclusive” version of “New.” You'll recall they did an exclusive for "Wings Over America." Walmart also has it's own exclusive, the deluxe edition with 15 tracks, adding "Turned Out," "Scared" and "Get Me Out of Here," matching the version from Amazon in France. (Thanks to Roger Stormo.)

Lewisohn’s New Beatles Book – One Month to UK Release
by beatlesblogger
September 11, 2013

It is one month today until the official UK release of respected Beatle historian, Mark Lewisohn's first volume in his three-part complete history of the band.

Volume One is called The Beatles All These Years: Tune In.

Beatles Tune In

Hmmm. Still not sure about that cover.

There are two videos about All These Years: Tune In on YouTube - the first a short introduction to the book:

The second a longer interview with Lewisohn about why he wrote the book and why it is important:

There will be two versions in the UK. The "trade" or standard, single book edition of 960 pages, and a deluxe, extended edition across two books totalling 1728 pages and featuring many extra words and photographs. The special edition consists of "....two individual hardbacks printed on New Langely Antique Wove wood free paper, with red-and-white head and tail bands and red ribbon marker. The two books will sit within a specially designed box and lid featuring soft touch and varnish finishes." Both are published by Little Brown.

Then there will be the US edition - just a single volume of 944 pages has been announced so far and with a different cover.

Lewisohn Beatles USA

The book comes out in the USA on October 29 and is published by Crown Archetype, a subsidiary of Random House.

It looks like it'll be a landmark publication - one I'll be keen to read and have in the collection.
