Paul's Tribute To Friend Rose Martin

www.paulmccartney.com

"We had sad news recently that our dear friend Rose Martin passed away at the age of 92. Rose was my housekeeper since the early 60s and for many years looked after us and our children. She was a very classy lady with a mischievous sense of humour. She was fiercely loyal and our family and many friends will miss her dearly."

How Many Copies of the White Album Do You Own?

August 12, 2013

A couple of months ago this interesting Dust and Grooves article about a performance artist named Rutherford Chang really grabbed my attention.

You see, Rutherford Chang is a Beatles collector who only collects one particular Beatles album.

It's the double LP that comes comes in the plain white cover and is simply called The Beatles....or as it's more colloquially known: The White Album.

Dust_and_Grooves_3542

You can take a look at a video featuring Chang's very large collection  here.

And then there's the rather amazing  beatlealbum.com website, dedicated solely to exploring every aspect of The Beatles.

All this got me wondering. How many copies of The White Album do you have in your collection?
They can be on vinyl, compact disc, 8-track tape, reel-to-reel, cassette...or maybe even as a digital download.
I added up the copies in my collection in various formats and it comes to a total of 16 copies in all. That's 5 x CDs, and 11 x LPs...nothing on Chang's extensive collection!
But I'd be very interested to hear from you.
How many do you have?

John Lennon says recording The Beatles' 'Let It Be' was 'hell' in decades-old lost interview
'It's torture every time we produce anything,' said singer
NME News
September 6, 2013

A lost, decades-old interview with John Lennon sees the singer reveal that recording the final Beatles' album 'Let It Be' was "hell".

As the Telegraph reports, the audio interview – with Village Voice journalist Howard Smith – was recorded shortly after the Fab Four had finished work on the 1969 studio album. However, it lay forgotten in Smith's attic for nearly four decades but will now be put up for sale by RR Auction.

In the interview, Lennon – who was speaking to Smith along with his wife, Yoko Ono – says of working on the record: "We were going through hell. We often do. It's torture every time we produce anything. The Beatles haven't got any magic you haven't got. We suffer like hell anytime we make anything, and we got each other to contend with. Imagine working with The Beatles, it's tough."

He added: "There's just tension. It's tense every time the red light goes on." The singer, who also described the LP as a "strange album", continued: "We never really finished it. We didn't really want to do it. Paul was hustling for us to do it. It's The Beatles with their suits off."

RR Auction vice president Bobby Livingston said that the tape had a minimum bid price of $300, but estimated that it could reach between $5,000 and $10,000. It is just one of 100 Beatles-related items that will go under the hammer of their Marvels Of Modern Music memorabilia sale. "It's a frank and honest interview from one of the most revered musicians and activists of all time," he said.

Last month (August) it was reported that The Beatles will release a second volume of recordings from their sessions at the BBC. A new collection featuring previously unreleased songs from the Fab Four's sessions with BBC radio in the mid-'60s is set to be released: a follow-up to their 1994 compilation 'Live At The BBC'.

Plans for the new set of recordings were revealed by a Beatles fansite which spotted a Facebook page from MCA Music in the Philippines, which is part of Universal Music, promising the new collection was on its way. The claims have not yet been confirmed by either The Beatles' official website or by Universal's representatives in the UK or US.

Meanwhile, dentist and Beatles fan Daniel Zuk has revealed that he plans to clone John Lennon using the DNA from one of the late musician's teeth. Zuk, who bought Lennon's tooth for £20,000 at auction in 2011, said: "If scientists think they can clone mammoths, then John Lennon could be next. To say I had a small part in bringing back one of rock's greatest stars would be mind-blowing."

Paul Remembers Sir David Frost

www.paulmccartney.com

"I was very sad to hear that my good friend David Frost passed away recently. I have known David for many years.

"We first met when he was doing a stand up comedy routine in the London night club Quaglinos. I also went to see him at The Blue Angel in London and we bumped into each other at many social events during the ‘Swinging 60s’.
"He interviewed me several times, most recently for the Al Jazeera Network. He was always a most interesting interviewer and, as history has proven, had many famous encounters such as the Frost / Nixon series of interviews.

"On a personal level I send my deepest sympathies to his lovely wife Carina and their three sons Miles, Wilfred and George, who I first remember when they came downstairs during a party to say good night wearing rather stunning striped pyjamas!

"He will be missed by many friends and I am proud to be able to say I was one of them."

John Brower, a promoter of The Toronto Rock and Roll Revival held at Varsity Stadium on September 13, 1969, brings to Toronto a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the only authorized physical copy of artwork created by all four Beatles.

Pop 69 Party - Toronto Internation Film Festival 2013 Toronto

(Newswire.net -- September 5, 2013) Toronto, ON -- John Brower, a promoter of The Toronto Rock and Roll Revival held at Varsity Stadium on September 13, 1969, brings to Toronto a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the only authorized physical copy of artwork created by all four Beatles.

The original was given to the Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 as a gift from The Beatles who were unable to attend. The magnificent example measuring 40 x 60 inches will be unveiled at The Hard Rock Cafe on Tuesday, September 10, 2013, at an exclusive Film Festival party. Doors open @ 9 P.M.

“This work of art was created by all four of The Beatles and is the only time they all participated in such an artistic endeavor.” Brower continued.

Tom Wilkes, one of the producers of Monterey Pop was entrusted with the art and his estate has authorized this reproduction.

To be held during the Toronto International Film Festival, the party is being hosted by Bella Luma Films and CanWood Entertainment at the legendary Hard Rock Cafe’s second floor parlour.

This party will also celebrate and announce the making of the feature movie POP 69. Slated for production in the Spring of 2014, the film recounts the adventures of Brower and friends as they unwittingly changed the musical and cultural landscape forever by staging this historic Rock and Roll Festival.

“Not only do I get to share the only known art work created by all four of the Beatles, but I also get to promote the upcoming film production of my early years as a rock festival promoter.”

It was at the “Brower Walker Presents” historic 1969 Toronto music festival that John Lennon performed for the first time ever other than as  a Beatle. The following week he told the others, “it’s over”. As Ringo stated sometime later, “When John and Eric got back from Toronto, The Beatles were over.”

Please join us in celebrating the announcement of POP 69 and witness the unveiling of this iconic artwork!

Doors open at 9pm On September 10th 2013 at the Hard Rock Café Toronto (Dundas Square- 279 Yonge Street, Toronto, M5B 1N8).  Visit www.pop69party.com to RSVP

Paul McCartney, Tom Hanks Auction Walk-On Role To Highest Bidder For Charity

Paul McCartney, Tom Hanks Auction Walk-On Role To Highest Bidder For Charity
By Ron Dicker

A once-in-a-lifetime chance to act onstage with gods of rock and film will cost you big -- but it's for a good cause.

The bidding to perform with Paul McCartney and Tom Hanks in L.A.'s Simply Shakespeare charity event had reached $8,000 by Tuesday, according to Charitybuzz.com. The "estimated value" of the bid was put at $30,000.

The proceeds will go to Shakespeare of Los Angeles, whose "Will Power To Youth" provides job-training and arts education for at-risk kids.

The package includes a "walk-on role" with McCartney, Hanks, William Shatner and other stars in a Sept. 25 reading of “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” at the Broad Stage in Santa Monica, Calif., plus rehearsal and dinner with the cast, after-party with the cast, and two tickets to the performance to show off for friends and loved ones.

The bidding ends 3 p.m. (EDT) on Sept. 11.

A recent bid for a walk-on speaking part in David O. Russell's new film with Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper, "American Hustle" fetched $76,000, Charitybuzz spokeswoman Glenda Luft Felden told The Huffington Post.

Charity Buzz, founded in 2005, has raised more than $80 million for nonprofits, according to a release.

McCartney once sang "Can't Buy Me Love," but the legendary Beatle can be bought for a good cause. Charity bids to meet him backstage at a concert reached "upwards of $100,000" on Charitybuzz, the spokeswoman said.

"He's very generous and philanthropic," she said.

Perhaps an extended period of time with both Hanks and Sir Paul, two pop culture icons, will multiply the appeal of the auction package.
