Paul McCartney concert announcement expected Monday

OTTAWA — Live Nation will hold a press conference Monday where it is expected the concert promoter will confirm one, possibly two, concerts by Paul McCartney in early July at Scotiabank Place.
If so, this will be the first musical performance by a member of the Beatles in Ottawa’s history. The late John Lennon was in Ottawa in the early 1970s when he met with then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau during his famous bed-in at a Montreal hotel.
The news will be announced at 6 p.m. Monday by Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson. It’s unusual for the mayor to make a concert announcement.
McCartney is on an extensive world tour called Out There. He is scheduled to perform on July 9 in Boston, Mass. and an Ottawa date could fit in just before that.

Paul McCartney, Youth plan more projects as The Fireman

Paul McCartney, Youth plan more projects as The Fireman
By Mayer Nissim
Published Friday, Apr 19 2013

Youth has teased the possibility of more collaborations with Paul McCartney as The Fireman.

The duo paired up for 1993 debut Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest and 1998's Rushes, before reuniting for 2008's Electric Arguments album.

Asked if there was a possibility of a fourth album, Youth (Martin Glover) told Digital Spy: "Hopefully, yeah. There's other projects I can't comment on at the moment because I'm not at liberty to, but there's definitely other interesting things happening.

"We first started that project 20 years ago, and we're still working on different Fireman projects.

"There's a longevity to it that I don't think would have happened if I'd been doing Paul McCartney solo albums, so I'm very happy I have that relationship with him."

Asked if he was happy to help McCartney's experimental nature be better known, Youth added: "I'm happy to facilitate artists' expression - that's what I love to do.

"Working with Scousers is great, because there's this really dry satire and dark humour in the room and in the work and I love that.

"I thought it was good that with The Fireman, Paul managed to get a little more acknowledgement for his avant-garde expression, which was a big part of The Beatles."

He continued: "John [Lennon] did get a lot of the credit for that, especially from when he was with Yoko [Ono], because Yoko was so associated with that. And absolutely, that was a massive part of it as well.

"Paul was actually the one who did the tape loops for 'Tomorrow Never Knows' and was coming up with a lot of the out-there arrangement suggestions for Sgt Pepper's... and hadn't really been acknowledged for that."

Youth said: "I think what was great with The Fireman as well, because he wanted to do it anonymously on the first two albums as well, we were allowed to really experiment.

"He wanted to experiment and do these things that had never been done before, and also he wasn't doing it to get approval from anyone - he did it anonymously!

"That I found very inspiring - that he had that weight of conviction and force of character that he was going to do these things with or without other people's approval or consideration."

He added: "I think that came from obviously the confidence he got from The Beatles, but also hanging out with a lot of artists in the '60s , with Linda [McCartney].

"Linda's father Lee Eastman represented [Willem] de Kooning and some of the big modern artists of American history, and Paul and Linda would hang out with them and he would tell me these great stories of the confidence he got from that.

"I remember him saying that he was watching de Kooning making this huge abstract painting, and he went over to him and said, 'What is it?' and de Kooning stepped back and looked at it and went, 'It kind of looks like a sofa to me'.

"That's when the penny dropped that he could actually get away with anything he wanted. There was no boundary or limits to your imagination or emotional expression... I found that very inspiring and I was very very happy to facilitate that, and still am."

Youth added that he would be writing new material for Killing Joke during rehearsals for their spring 2013 tour.

He has also produced Ian McCulloch solo record Holy Ghosts, which is released on April 22 via Edsel Records, packaged with McCulloch's fourth solo studio album Pro Patria Mori.

Campaign connects citizens with legislators as Senate debates new gun laws

By JON BLISTEIN
APRIL 18, 2013

Paul McCartney has recorded a message for the "Voices Against Violence" campaign started by Tony Bennett, his son Danny and the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

"Voices Against Violence" is the group's new text-to-call drive, which connects participants to their respective congressional representative so that they can make their voice heard on gun control as the Senate debates new gun legislation this week.

Users who text "MYVOICE" to 877877 will be prompted for their ZIP codes. After replying, their phones will ring with a message from McCartney, after which they will be connected to the proper Senate office.

McCartney is one of many celebrities who have participated in the campaign, which has also included Alec Baldwin, Josh Groban, Mia Farrow, Gloria Estefan, KD Lang and more.

"We the people need to make our voices heard on this issue," the elder Bennett said in a statement. "This is a job for the people, not the politicians."

The first-time engagement for Paul at the venue is his first New York appearance since last year's historic 12-12-12 benefit and continues a tradition of legendary NYC area McCartney concerts including 2011's Yankee Stadium doubleheader, 2009's inaugural Citi Field three-play, and stretching all the way back to The Beatles' 1965 musical christening of Shea Stadium.

As previously announced, the tour will also be making stops May 18 and 19 in Orlando, FL at Amway Center, May 22 and 23 in Austin, TX at the Frank Erwin Center, May 26 in Memphis, TN at FedEx Forum, May 29 and 30 in Tulsa OK at the BOK Center, July 9 in Boston, MA at Fenway Park, July 12 in Washington DC at Nationals Ballpark, July 14 in Indianapolis IN at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, July 16 in Milwaukee WI at Miller Park and July 19 in Seattle, WA at Safeco Field.

Tickets to the newly announced shows will be on sale beginning Monday, April 22 at 10 a.m. local time at Ticketmaster.com. American Express® Cardmembers can purchase tickets before the general public beginning Friday, April 19 at 10 a.m. and concluding Sunday, April 21 at 10 p.m. All times local.

Registered fans of PaulMcCartney.com will have the opportunity to buy pre-sale tickets for the show from 9am (local time) on Friday 19th April directly from the website. Paul McCartney's "Out There" tour will feature brand new, never before seen production and, as ever, hours of material from the most beloved catalog in popular music, with Paul performing songs spanning his entire career -- as a solo artist, member of Wings and of course The Beatles.

The McCartney live experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity. For approximately three hours, many of the greatest moments of the last 50 years of musical history -- not to mention the soundtracks of entire lives -- are magically brought to life as only Paul can do. Last year marked 40 years since Paul's premiere tour as a solo artist and these past four decades have seen him play in a staggeringly impressive range of venues and locations, including outside the Coliseum in Rome, in Moscow's Red Square, at the White House, a free show in Mexico to over 400,000 people and even a performance beamed into outer space! Having played with his peerless band of Paul 'Wix' Wickens (keyboards), Rusty Anderson (guitar), Abe Laboriel Jr. (drums) and Brian Ray (bass/guitar) for over ten years, Paul never disappoints -- as reviews of his last two-night stand in NYC -- 2011's Yankee Stadium shows -- will attest:

"Mr. McCartney is not saying goodbye but touring stadiums and playing marathon concerts. Friday's set ran two-and-a-half hours, with Mr. McCartney constantly onstage, and it had 35 songs, not counting a few additional excerpts. His concerts now are a gentle reminder of his survival and vitality... He perseveres, and entertains, by directly reconnecting to his songs across the decades and still having fun." -- THE NEW YORK TIMES

"McCartney's continued ability to perform such key material so gracefully makes his shows more than just worthy entertainment. They're a kind of public service." -- THE NEW YORK DAILY NEWS

"The 2½-hour, 35-song set featured five decades worth of hits without a dud in the batch" -- THE NEW YORK POST

"Paul McCartney is many things, a gifted musician, singer and band leader. Mostly, he is an inspiration. Last night at Yankee Stadium, McCartney played and played, gave and gave, for well over two hours. He never stopped singing, playing, performing and smiling. He loves pleasing crowds." -- THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

"Dude is almost twice my age, and that f***er can belt, and in the physical-grace department, my blind guess of his age might have been more like a very agile 50. I could barely stand in front of my center field seat, which proved necessary pretty much the entire time... Changed my life." -- THE VILLAGE VOICE

Paul is throwing himself into 2013 with full force following yet another landmark year in 2012, which saw him conclude his record-breaking "On The Run" tour, release his Grammy-winning Kisses On The Bottom album, accept a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, play at both the Diamond Jubilee and Olympics Opening Ceremony, be named MusiCares Person of the Year, and headline 12-12-12 The Concert For Sandy Relief -- to highlight just a few memorable moments. With the "Out There'" tour and a new studio album in the works, it looks like 2013 will show no signs of Paul slowing down.

The "Out There" tour will see Paul and his band travel the world throughout the year, visiting both places of historical significance to Paul and new spots for the very first time. Further announcements and dates will be added in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to PaulMcCartney.com for official news and updates.
