Paul McCartney took center stage for the first major event at Sacramento’s shiny, new arena. McCartney’s classics served as the soundtrack to the start of this new era in Downtown Sacramento. The legendary performer thrilled this first Golden 1 Center crowd – many stepping inside this building for the first time. “I love the old Arco Arena, [but] it was a lousy place to see a concert,” said Sacramento resident Jeff Harris. Kings owner Vivek Ranadive was joined by mayor-elect Darrell Steinberg for the big night. “Time to stop and smell the roses just for a night, then we’ll get back to work,” Steinberg said. On this Tuesday night, thousands came downtown to see a star perform in this brand new setting.

After the long and winding road to get a new Sacramento arena built, Golden 1 Center received its proper coronation on Tuesday night. And that fanfare arrived via the opening notes of “A Hard Day’s Night,” a clang of a chord that not only kicked off Paul McCartney’s nearly three hour set but inaugurated a new era of Sacramento concert-going. By the multicolored glow of the $8 million Piglet sculpture in the plaza, some 15,500 people passed through Golden 1 Center’s doors to witness a member of rock ’n’ roll royalty at the new home of the Sacramento Kings. McCartney appearing in Sacramento isn’t necessarily new – he performed at Arco Arena in 2002 and 2005 – and any time the former member of the Beatles comes to town with his decades-long songbook is a Big Deal. But this show took on an extra level of excitement and significance with Golden 1 Center activating for the first time as a concert facility. As McCartney arrived on stage in black jeans and a trim blazer, the roar was that of the Kings advancing to the NBA Finals on a buzzer-beater shot (which, by the way, would be a welcome turn of events for the team). The mood stayed upbeat throughout the show, so much that it was the rare classic rock show where Baby Boomers weren’t moaning en masse for people to sit in their seats – at least, such was the case on the floor. Even better, Sacramento finally has an arena with decent sound. Any memories of “Echo Arena,” as local concertgoers often referred to the cavernous sounding Arco Arena, faded quickly as McCartney and his lean, four-piece backing band wound through more than three dozen songs. The level of clarity and balance in Golden 1 Center’s sound system was welcome after so many years of muddy sounding music at the Kings’ former arena. McCartney’s guitar fingerpicking in “Blackbird” was especially resonant, and the overall band sound in more rocking tunes like “Live and Let Die” and “Birthday” was punchy without veering into the bombastic. Bigger tests of Golden 1 Center’s acoustics will come later, once the arena hosts heavy metal bands with jackhammer guitar riffs and hip-hop acts that thrives on deep bass. But for now, McCartney was an apt way to break in the sound system. After all, McCartney’s music covered a range of styles and moods, such as a somewhat torchy take on the Beatles’ “Here, There and Everywhere” and the proto-techno sound of “Temporary Secretary,” a deep cut from 1980’s “McCartney II.” McCartney’s set overall covered nearly 50 years of music, from McCartney’s pre-Beatles days in The Quarrymen (1958’s “In Spite of all the Danger”) to “New,” a jaunty 2013 solo track that sounds like it’s going to break into “Penny Lane.” The unintended downside of a high-tech sound system is that it can also highlight flaws. McCartney’s voice showed a slight creakiness in some moments, such as the “oooohs” in “Here Today,” and he doesn’t quite hit the growling high notes in “Maybe I’m Amazed” like he used to, especially in the chorus. But at 74, McCartney still showed all the charm and musicianship that makes him among the most revered performers in pop music history. Tuesday’s show featured an especially fresh McCartney given that his last performance was Aug. 18 in Cleveland. McCartney remained chatty and engaged throughout the set, as he sometimes danced in place between tunes and joked with fans who yelled out their devotion to Sir Paul. But most of the magic was in the music, including the hymn-like “Let It Be” or McCartney’s tasty electric guitar licks during the Wings song “Let Me Roll It.” The arena erupted into a giant “na na-na na” chorus during “Hey Jude,” and people danced in their seats during “Love Me Do” while trying not to spill $13 beers. And in the end, this was just the beginning for Golden 1 Center. McCartney’s jet touched down at Sacramento Executive Airport at about 5:45 p.m. Monday. Photos show the legendary pop star being driven away in one of three black SUVs awaiting his arrival.

McCartney was waving out the window in one photo. McCartney then arrived at Golden 1 Center shortly after. From inside, you could hear what sounded like a sound check. According to the website The Smoking Gun, documents from a past world tour show McCartney has specific backstage requests at his concert venues, especially regarding his views on the treatment of animals. One clause reads “it is crucial you do not provide furniture made of any animal skin or print.” Another reads, “there will be no meat or meat by-products allowed to be served in the dressing rooms.” Life-long McCartney fans Liz Smith and Rita LaBoffe arrived from Ohio and have tickets for both nights McCartney performs. “This is quite exciting to be here for the opening,” said Liz Smith. Smith and Rita LaBoffe have been friends since first grade and follow McCartney on all his tours. “How much money combined will you spend in Sacramento?” we asked. “A lot. But if I tell you I’ll have to kill you,” LaBoffe said. The doors at Golden 1 Center open at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday for the concert.

SACRAMENTO — Sir Paul McCartney will be the brand-new Golden 1 Center’s inaugural performance Tuesday, guaranteeing some classic tunes inside and lots of traffic outside. Here are the road closures around the arena you should watch out for: 5th Street between J and L streets L Street between 7th and 5th streets Southbound 4th Street from L Street to Capitol Mall If you’re driving in, the Golden 1 Center app allows you to reserve and pre-pay for parking in nearby garages. Another option is using Regional Transit or a ride-hailing app like Uber or Lyft to get to the arena.
Paul and his band are busy preparing to get back out on the road in the coming month with two forthcoming ‘One On One’ shows in Sacramento, and two very special performances at the Desert Trip music festival.
Some serious ground has already been covered by Paul and the touring team this year with dates played across Europe and North and South America. As both audience and band begin to get excited again – we find out how and why Paul came up with the name of the tour.
This month’s question comes from Cesar in Peru who asks: “Why did you name the new tour ‘One On One’? Is there a special meaning behind it?”
We spoke with Paul ahead of his forthcoming shows to find out. He answered:
“Thank you for your question, Cesar. When people would talk about going to the ‘Out There’ shows, they said that even though it was a huge stadium, there was an intimate feeling about it. And I thought that was interesting really because with the big screens, we can make it a bit ‘One On One’. It’s like you watching me tell a story. So I was looking for a title that said something about intimacy, or something that summed up that feeling. Then I thought of the expression ‘one on one’ and they just looked like nice words – a good title. So that was it! It was because people had fed back this idea that the show, even though it was giant, somehow managed to communicate an intimate feeling between the audience and me.”
Paul will perform on the 4th and 5th October in Sacramento and the 8th and 15th October at Desert Trip, California.

It's Colombian singer-songwriter Fonseca.Fonseca wrote and recorded a verse in Spanish for a new version of the song at the ex-Beatles' request.He had a single day to do it.Fonseca's won four Latin Grammy awards. He was contacted by Starr's team and put himself to work immediately: The song is in honor of the recently reached Colombian peace treaty.It was originally created for the United Nation's International Peace Day, September 21st.In his contribution, Fonseca expresses his feelings about the recently signed peace treaty between the government of Colombia and the FARC.
