The opening track of Paul McCartney's new "Kisses on the Bottom" album, "I'm Gonna Sit Write Down and Write Myself a Letter," got its first airplay in the UK but not on a rock radio show.

The song was featured on Jamie Cullum’s show on BBC Radio 2, which specializes in jazz and blues. McCartney did a unique spoken intro for the song. Premiering a McCartney song on a jazz show is unusual, but the album is clearly pointed at both rock audiences who love McCartney as a Beatle and jazz audiences who like the type of music on the album.

Collum also taped an interview with the former Beatle which will air Feb. 7. His BBC page, which will archive the show after it airs, is here. 

Collum says the interview is an in-depth discussion with the former Beatle about his love of jazz and how improvisation and other elements of jazz have affected the way McCartney composes music throughout his career. 

 

Anyone who loves jazz will appreciate Cullum's show. It's a great showcase for a cross section of jazz music. In the UK, the show airs on BBC Radio 2 Tuesdays at 7 p.m.
