Glyn Johns lashes out at Phil Spector’s work with the Beatles: ‘Let It Be is a bunch of garbage’
by Something Else!
December 30, 2014
Glyn Johns was famously brought in to make some sense of the hours upon hours of rehearsal tapes that eventually became the Beatles’ Let It Be, though both of his initial mixes were subsequently rejected. He’d envisioned the project, then titled Get Back, as a verite project — something that showed the Beatles as they were, with studio flubs, off-the-cuff chatter and goofy cover tunes in tact.
That’s not how it turned out, of course. John Lennon subsequently passed the moldering tapes to Phil Spector, who then added his infamous Wall of Sound production techniques to an album that had once been framed as an attempt to get back to the basics.
Johns, in a new talk with the New York Times, clearly remains horrified — 45 years later.
“I was disappointed that Lennon got away with giving it to Spector, and even more disappointed with what Spector did to it,” says Johns, who has just released a new memoir titled Sound Man. “It has nothing to do with the Beatles at all. Let It Be is a bunch of garbage.”
Glyn Johns initially began work on the Get Back tapes in March of 1969, even as the Beatles started tandem sessions for the album that would become Abbey Road. After his initial pass was turned down, additional sessions were held in early January 1970. Johns was handed the tapes again, and once again failed to earn the Beatles’ approval. By March, Spector had been given the same songs; he completed the heavily overdubbed project in April 1970.
“As I say in the book, he puked all over it,” John adds. “I’ve never listened to the whole thing, I’ve only listened to the first few bars of some things and said, ‘Oh, forget it.’ It was ridiculously, disgustingly syrupy.”
Paul McCartney agreed, eventually releasing his own stripped-down mix in 2003, called Let It Be: Naked.

Paul McCartney calls study courses focusing on The Beatles 'ridiculous yet flattering'
The singer doesn't believe study courses can create great musicians
By Dean Van Nguyen
December 29, 2014
Paul McCartney has dubbed popular music study courses with a focus on The Beatles as "ridiculous, and yet very flattering".
Taking part in a Q&A via his official website, the 72-year-old was responding to a query from a student studying for an MA in Popular Music that asked how he felt about the existence of such courses.
"For me it's ridiculous, and yet very flattering," responded McCartney. "Ridiculous because we [The Beatles] never studied anything, we just loved our popular music: Elvis, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Fats Domino, etc. And it wasn’t a case of 'studying' it. I think for us, we'd have felt it would have ruined it to study it.
"We wanted to make our own minds up just by listening to it. So our study was listening. But to be told – as I was years ago now – that The Beatles were in my kid's history books? That was like 'What?! Unbelievable, man!' Can you imagine when we were at school, finding yourself in a history book?!"
McCartney did state, however, that he doesn't believe studying popular music can make a person a great popular musician: "To think that you can go to a college and come out like Bob Dylan? Someone like Bob Dylan, you can't make."
Earlier this month, McCartney revealed that he had been writing music inspired by the recent civil rights protests in Ferguson and New York following the deaths of Michael Brown and Eric Garner at the hands of police..
"I was thinking recently about all these protests in New York and around the country. I thought it would be great to put something down about that, just to add my voice to the thousands of people walking in the streets," he said. "I thought it through and it just didn't come easily. I'm not giving up on it, but it didn't come easily, whereas some other emotions might come easily to me."

A Hard Day's workout! Paul McCartney and wife Nancy Shevell jump in their car after a Christmas gym session
By HANNA FLINT FOR MAILONLINE

Sir Paul McCartney won't be piling on the Christmas pounds this season.
The Beatles star was spotted after a workout with wife Nancy Shevell, jumping into their burgundy Lexus on Christmas Eve.
Sir Paul, 72, jumped in the front wearing a blue zipped up jumper, tracksuit bottoms and New Balance trainers, while Nancy took the passenger seat wearing a fur-trimmed parka.
Working out: Sir Paul McCartney and Nancy Shevell hit the gym at Christmas
No doubt the McCartney household's Christmas dinner was a healthy extravaganza made up of the best dishes vegan cuisine has to offer.
Though the singer has admitted that he and his late wife Linda McCartney it was sometimes difficult to keep with tradition by going meat-free.
'We were like, you know, wait a minute, what can we do for Christmas? I wanted to be able do things, like traditional father things,' he told BBC Radio 4 in 2013. 'So at Christmas I wanted to carve something. We didn't have a turkey, we didn't have a roast, we invented stuff.'
Clean living: The couple jumped in their burgundy Lexus after a workout this week
Vegan: The family will be enjoying a meat-free Christmas dinner
'Linda invented a macaroni turkey, it was like a macaroni cheese and we let it go cold and then you pull it out, heat it up, and I would slice it.
Sir Paul added: 'We had some pretty goofy things. It was good fun. It was great. We enjoyed it and it tasted good. It allowed us to enjoy the whole thing rather than think, "Oh we're vegetarians now, our life has ended".'
Changed man: Sir Paul became a vegan after meeting his late wife Linda McCartney
Before he met Linda, McCartney did eat meat and one time The Beatles ate horse for Christmas.
During their final residence at the Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany, the band dined at the city's British seaman's mission with The Dominoes.
John Frankland of The Dominoes said: 'We ate steaks and we found out later that they were horse steaks. We'd eaten a horse for Christmas.'
Merry Christmas: McCartney shared a festive flashback of his second band Wings in which late wife Linda was a member

Three Great Beatle Auction Items
by beatlesblogger
Posted on December 26, 2014
Over the years we’ve purchased a lot of pre-loved Beatle CDs (and vinyl) at online auctions (e.g. Ebay), but never before at a real, live auction – until now.
The Mossgreen Auction house in Melbourne, Victoria recently held a major sale of collectables. Part of it was a significant offering of Beatle items – memorabilia, books, records and CDs. You can view the catalogue online (the Beatle items start on page 8 at Lot No. 715. They continue to Lot No. 836).
These all came from one collector who was downsizing….pretty impressive.
For a while now we’ve had a hankering to get the previously-released CD boxed sets of the Beatles singles, and the CD EP’s. These came out way back in 1992 – and in the Mossgreen auction there was one lot containing both box sets:
There was also another separate lot with all the CD singles in a special box, all on 3-inch CD’s. This was issued in 1989:
Figuring we’d take a chance we put a pre-auction bid on both lots. It was one of those auction sites where you could watch and also listen in live online as the auction actually proceeded. The auctioneer steadily worked his way to our first lot (for the 3-inch CD single set). We won it in quick time – with nobody else bidding at all. The set was ours.
It comes in a very dark blue-black cardboard and brass-hinged hinged box:
Each of the 22 tiny CDs is housed in an individual folder:
These 3-inch CD’s were also issued individually over a period of time (late 1988-1989), ut it’s nice to have them collected in one box. There’s a small black folder in the box detailing each single.
Next up in the auction was the lot of two boxed sets. One was the Beatles EP’s, and one the CD singles again, this time on individual, regular sized CDs. Again, our pre-auction bid was the only one made, and again we won. It was all over so very fast:
Each of these boxes is in mint condition. They’re both dark grey-black in colour with gold lettering and they’re hinged at the top. These boxes are quite beautifully made with a cloth-covered, thick board. In the photo above you can see the brass rivets holding them together. On the EP box the outer top tilts forward and there is a secondary flap inside which lifts to reveal the 14 CD sleeves (including a double CD Magical Mystery Tour):
The 22 CD singles box is very similar:
So, expecting to win maybe just one auction lot if we were lucky – we ended up with two! Three great CD box sets in all, and in mint condition from a Beatle collector in Melbourne who was selling off some of their prized items…..

Music Rep for Chris Cornell, John Lennon + More Threatens to Sue YouTube for $1 Billion

Irving Azoff, who manages performance rights of artists such as Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, John Lennon, the Eagles and more, is threatening to sue YouTube for $1 billion.
Through Azoff’s new outfit Global Music Rights, the music industry veteran manages the rights to approximately 20,000 songs from some of the biggest artists in history. Azoff claims that YouTube lacks performance rights for the catalog of songs, which has led to a potential lawsuit if YouTube doesn’t remove the tunes.
Music publishers have been fighting with streaming services such as Pandora and Spotify for some time, but Azoff is going after YouTube, citing their “attitude” as one of the reasons. “They are the ones that have been least cooperative and the company our clients feel are the worst offenders,” Azoff tells the Hollywood Reporter.
In a letter sent to YouTube earlier this month, Global Music Rights attorney Howard King writes, “Without providing a shred of documentation, you blithely proffer that YouTube can ignore the Notices because it operates under blanket licenses from performing rights organizations other than Global. However, you refuse to provide the details of any such license agreements, presumably because no such agreements exist for YouTube’s present uses of the Songs in any service, but certainly with respect to its recently added Music Key service.”
YouTube’s upcoming Music Key service will offer subscription-based listening, which will allow YouTube to compete with Pandora and Spotify.
YouTube tells the Hollywood Reporter, “We’ve done deals with labels, publishers, collection societies and more to bring artists’ music into YouTube Music Key. To achieve our goal of enabling this service’s features on all the music on YouTube, we’ll keep working with both the music community and with the music fans invited to our beta phase.”
The $1 billion lawsuit has yet to be filed, but stay tuned for further updates on the impending action.
