Different Markets, Different Covers

Different Markets, Different Covers

I know Christmas is well and truly over, but one more thing on the "Holidays Rule" release before we move on.
This CD came out with the title "Holidays Rule" in the US - but for the European, UK and Australian markets we got a CD called "Christmas Rules". This is because we don't use the term "happy holidays" when talking about the Christmas break.
Here's what they both look like, beginning with the US version which comes in a sparkly, metallic, dark red and white gatefold cover:
Christmas Rules front USChristmas Rules rear USChristmas Rules g-fold USChristmas Rules CD US
And in the UK/EU/Australia it is called "Christmas Rules" and comes in a bright red, matt finish gatefold:
Christmas Rules frontChristmas Rules rear AustChristmas Rules g-fold AustChristmas Rules Aust CD
Christmas Rules booklet
The 8-page booklet (above) for both the US and the Australian/European versions appears to be the same. There is an odd website address on the rear of the booklet though. In large type at the bottom of the page of both versions it says: SEARCH PARTY, and then gives this address in smaller type: searchpartymusic.com
This is strange because that's the website for a Boston-based wedding and functions band. Not sure what's going on with that....

Pete Townshend receives 2013 Les Paul Award

By Randy Lewis
THE L.A. TIMES MUSIC BLOG
January 28, 2013, 12:32 p.m.

This post has been updated. See note below for details.
Four of the key bands from the 1960s British Invasion were represented Friday in Anaheim when the Who’s lead guitarist and main songwriter, Pete Townshend, was given the Les Paul Award at the annual TEC Awards ceremony, part of the annnual NAMM music products convention.
Townshend was serenaded by Eric Burdon of the Animals, who sang “The Seeker,”  while ex-Beatle Paul McCartney put together a video greeting saluting his longtime friend and fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member. Not on camera but also sending in a letter of congratulations was Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger.
Additionally, guitarist Laurence Juber, who has collaborated with McCartney and Townshend, played an acoustic version of the “Who’s Next” cornerstone song “Won’t Get Fooled Again,” Julia Fordham sang a pair of songs form Townshend’s long-shelved, belatedly completed “Lifehouse” rock opera, “The Song Is Over” and “Pure and Easy,” and 19-year-old L.A. newcomer Bree Kennedy handled “I Can’t Explain,” the Who’s first hit.
Townshend himself joined in for the finale performance of his 1980 solo single, “Let My Love Open the Door.” Lovin’ Spoonful frontman John Sebastian served as emcee for the event at the Anaheim Hilton.
During a backstage interview with British producer and humorist Martin Lewis, who presented Townshend with his award for musical and technical achievements, Townshend said Paul’s role as an innovator of recording technology was every bit as important to him as Paul’s more widely known reputation as the creator of his namesake line of electric guitars.
Paul’s advancements in multi-track recording played a major role in the vistas Townshend explored in the late 1960s and early 1970s as the Who’s recordings became more sonically and musically sophisticated.
“For me, probably the biggest moment was with ‘Quadrophenia,’ where I was recording on eight-track at home and a lot of those eight-track backing tracks with synthesizers, many guitars, piano, keyboards and things like that were actually used on the Who’s albums. We all have Les Paul to thank for that,” Townshend said.
“He was a fabulous personality, and a very kind man," he added. "He gave me one of his guitars once -- one of his home guitars -- and I miss him terribly. I only met him four or five times, but I miss him terribly. He was such a fabulous man, and really, really a great genius and innovator.”
Townshend piggybacked his NAMM awards appearance with the opening of a new leg of the Who’s “Quadrophenia” tour, which stops Monday at the Honda Center in Anaheim and Wednesday at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Update at 1:36 p.m.: An earlier edition of this post misidentified "The Seeker" as a track from "Tommy." It was originally released only as a single. Townshend's "Lifehouse" rock opera also was identified as "never finished" project. He belatedly completed and released a version of "Lifehouse" in 2000.

Track Of The Week: ‘Heart Of The Country (2013)’

This week's track of the week is a little different. Paul re-recorded 'Heart Of The Country' at the tail-end of 2012 for a new Linda McCartney Foods advert promoting their new chilled range. Scroll down to watch the advert.
Let us know what you think of the song, the TV ad and - most importantly - what you think of the new range of food in the comments below...

El Clásico
28/01/13

My Life as a Vegetarian - Supporting Linda's Legacy

My Life as a Vegetarian - Supporting Linda's Legacy
Paul McCartney
Musician
Posted: 25/01/2013

Growing up in Liverpool, I would have thought of a vegetarian as a wimp.  We could be a prejudiced bunch at times but I'm not sure people would automatically think like that these days.
I've been a vegetarian for a long time now and over the years I've seen how the attitudes have changed around the world, so I'm not surprised when I see new research that shows more and more people are increasingly adopting 'meat free eating'. Even 20 years ago, it could sometimes be difficult to find vegetarian options in good restaurants. Now it's great to see more and more choice with some brilliant creative dishes in restaurants, cafés and supermarkets. There is definitely now an overall greater acceptance of being vegetarian.
Linda played a massive part in all this. Over the years, she converted many people we knew. Our friends, people we worked with and even some of our roadies on tour. She had a non-aggressive forcefulness about her. We dreamed that one day you could be driving down the motorway and stop off for some food and there would be options for us and now of course there are. When Linda originally brought out her range she was pioneering. It kick-started a revolution of choice in the food industry. Over the years we saw more and more products being added to the market but instead of being a competitive business woman Linda thought this was great. The more the better.
People don't just see it as an issue about kindness to animals. For us, at the time it was about that. One day I had an epiphany. I was taking animals' lives. These days though, people are better educated about their diets and the health benefits of reducing meat intake but also and crucially the environmental impact that meat production has on our planet. The UN actually produced a report in 2006 (Livestock's Long Shadow) outlining how the livestock industry was responsible for more harmful gases than the transport industry - they said the best thing you can do is reduce your meat intake. For this campaign some interesting research was produced, predicting a 50% rise in vegetarianism in the UK and the idea of 'flexitarianism' becoming more widespread as people become educated about the impact of meat eating on health and the environment. It's becoming more and more clear that one of the most effective things any individual can do to help the environment is to eat less meat.
We launched a Meat Free Monday campaign in 2009 in order to encourage people to look at their diets and make a meaningful change by giving up meat just one day a week. It's not a new idea; it's something that is done in many places around the world. We thought Monday was a good day to do it as many people tend to overdo it at the weekend. People thought recycling was a bit weird at first but now it's weird if you don't recycle!
Over the years Linda's food company has continued to grow from strength to strength. Recently, new chilled ranges were launched in all the major supermarkets and sales continue to rise. We felt now was a good time to launch a national ad campaign to remind people. We wanted to create something really special. Something that really captured the spirit of Linda and what she loved and what she was all about. We worked with the guys at Passion Pictures (I knew them through their work for Beatles Rockband), my son-in-law Simon Aboud worked as the creative director for the project and the kids were all involved too, so it's a family affair.  I love the animation and the way we are portrayed as different characters, especially the way some of us are given quirky animal personas. I think she would have highly approved of this, as it shows her looking after her family and all the animals at the same time.
Linda would also have loved the woodland setting and creative detail of the animation, which I think is just beautiful. It's got a classic, timeless feel, which is hopefully reflected by the new recording I did of my song Heart of the Country. The countryside is at the heart of this project, so it felt like the right fit. We were also lucky enough to get Elvis Costello to do the voiceover. He is an old family friend and someone who knew Linda well.
The ad will air from 28 January and will be on TV through February and March. Myself and the whole family are all really proud of it, and we think Linda would be too. Linda's values and ethos from 40 years ago are finally being adopted by many people. We are committed to supporting her vision and ensuring that we play a central role in shaping a healthy future for vegetarianism and meat-free living.
Check it out for yourself:

‘My Life As A Vegetarian’ By Paul McCartney

www.paulmccartney.com

Paul has written a personal and heartfelt article on his life as a vegetarian which is published today exclusively at The Huffington Post. In it he states that, ‘Growing up in Liverpool, I would have thought of a vegetarian as a wimp. We could be a prejudiced bunch at times but I'm not sure people would automatically think like that these days.’

In the dispatch Paul warmly recalls Linda McCartney’s pioneering role in helping to kick-start, ‘a revolution of choice in the food industry’. Today the vegetarian choice is wider than ever, augmented with the recent release of Linda McCartney Foods’ new range of chilled foods and the McCartney family’s Meat Free Monday campaign.

To read the full article, head over to The Huffington Post HERE!

Fans can also catch Paul discussing his life as a vegetarian on BBC Radio 4’s ‘The Food Programme’ this Sunday at 12:30pm.

Sir Paul McCartney 'embarrassed' by the state of his old sheep

Sir Paul McCartney 'embarrassed' by the state of his old sheep
FRIDAY 25 JANUARY 2013

Sir Paul McCartney has confessed he is embarrassed when visitors see the state of his sheep - because they live to be so old on his farm.

The vegetarian musician keeps a flock at his property, but as he refuses to send them to an abattoir they are there until they die of old age,

In an interview for Radio 4's The Food Programme to be broadcast on Sunday, he points out that few people ever see elderly sheep and are surprised by their appearance.

"I live on a sheep farm so we shear the sheep, but they die of old age - and you know what, it's kind of embarrassing, because none of the other farms have got old sheep," he said.

"They're all gone before they're old - they just die like we do. It's life, it's death, it's what happens.

"We just give them a good life and I take the wool from them. but it can be embarrassing. you know, people say 'look at the state of your sheep' and I say yes they're very old and you know there is only one alternative - send them to the knacker's."

In an interview with presenter Sheila Dillon, Sir Paul talks about his vegetarian lifestyle and his desire to encourage more people to try eating less meat.

It comes as his late wife Linda's veggie food range is given a new push, with a TV ad campaign and new products. The ex-Beatle is also publicising the idea of taking a break from animal products with "meat-free Mondays".

In the programme, to be broadcast on Sunday at 12.30pm, he explains: "Basically what we're saying with the meat-free Monday campaign is that out of your seven days, you might think of one day being meat-free. we're not really pushing it too heavily. we're not saying you should go veggie, it's good for you.

"We're saying 'just try one day', and a lot of people say that's very do-able, a very accessible idea, and they enjoy it.

"There's all sorts of economic arguments that in a recession, meat tends to be the expensive bit of what you buy, so generally speaking, I think it's a good idea."

January 23 2013

For years I have been trying to get a Beatles Archive going as it would be invaluable for posterity to have a large collection of information, photos, books etc on the Beatles for future generations to have access to and study. I persisted with Neil at Apple, but he eventually said no. I then had meetings about five years ago with Colin at John Moores University and he thought that my concept of 'Bill Harry's Beatles and Mersey Beat Archive' was a good one. But nothing happened with that. so I'm going ahead myself and have rented a storage unit. I would appreciate any contributions to the Archive - photostats of your clippings, any extra books or fanzines you have, chart facts from different countries, copies of photos etc. This can be a tremendous venture for the future. Don't forget - as much Mersey Beat material as possible, too.

A World Without Love - The Beatles?

Subido el 05/10/2009
by CompleatBeatles
This track appeared on various obscure bootlegs in the 1980's. It was originally claimed to be Paul McCartney's original demo of the track, though this claim is extremely questionable. In fact, the vocals on this track bare only a vague resemblance of those of Paul McCartney. Nonetheless, this is a lovely version of this wonderful track, regardless of its authenticity.

Rare Paul McCartney Recording of 'A World Without Love' Surfaces

Song was taped at Peter Asher's family home in 1964

By DAVID BROWNE
JANUARY 18, 2013

To the small but growing list of rare Beatles tapes that unexpectedly pop up, add one more: Paul McCartney's solo performance of "A World Without Love," the debut 1964 single by Peter and Gordon that hit Number One in both the U.S. and the U.K.
The only known McCartney version of the song, the tape – featuring McCartney singing and accompanying himself on acoustic guitar – was unearthed a few months ago by Peter Asher, half of Peter and Gordon and the brother of McCartney's girlfriend at the time, Jane Asher. In early 1964, McCartney was living in the Asher family home, sharing the top floor with Peter. "He had two tape machines and I had one – we were both into taping," Asher says. "Paul told me about the song and played it for me."
As Asher soon learned, nothing became of the song. "No one wanted it," he says. "John didn't like it or something." (The song has been credited to Lennon-McCartney, but McCartney apparently wrote it alone.) Billy J. Kramer, a Merseybeat singer of the time, also turned it down.
Not long after McCartney played "A World Without Love" for Asher (who taped it on a reel-to-reel deck), Peter and Gordon, the duo Asher formed with Gordon Waller, landed a record deal. Immediately, Asher asked McCartney if the duo could have the unfinished ballad. "Paul said, 'Absolutely,' but I had to nag him to write the bridge. It came several weeks later, just in time for the session." As a result, the tape in Asher's possession doesn't feature the song's bridge.
Asher discovered the recording (a DAT tape of the reel-to-reel original) in a storage space in L.A. Currently, there are no plans to release it, but Beatles fans can hear it in Peter Asher: A Musical Memoir of the '60s and Beyond, Asher's touring show, which plays shows in New York, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Clear Lake, Iowa, over the next few weeks. Also on the tape, from the same bedroom recording, is McCartney singing an early version of "I'll Follow the Sun," with a quicker, friskier tempo than the ones the Beatles used for their recording of the song.

Paul And Elvis Collaboration Revealed

Fans of Paul's have been speculating all week about a teaser trailer for a new animated track that found its way onto YouTube. Finally, in a statement issued today, the McCartney family confirmed what it is all about.

The family today confirm that the leaked track and accompanying animation are part of the #LoveLinda campaign they have been working on alongside the Linda McCartney Foods brand. This is the first time in 15 years that the brand has done TV advertising. The TV advert shows the McCartney family as you have never seen them before in animated form.

Singer songwriter Elvis Costello has provided the voiceover to the animation which, in addition to the family, features a host of psychedelic animal characters.

Elvis Costello has been vegetarian since the early 1980s and remembers Linda McCartney and all she strove for; “Linda always talked well and made it seem that you wouldn’t be joining a secret weird society by being vegetarian.”

Produced by world renowned Passion Pictures, whose other work includes projects for The Beatles and The Gorillaz, the animation transports viewers into a fairy-tale world where characters including Horse boy, Napoleon Dog and Ballerina Cat join the McCartney family in a musical fanfare that culminates with a woodland feast.

Airing for the first time on 28 January, the animation is part of a national #LoveLinda campaign to launch the new range of chilled meat free foods from Linda McCartney.

McCartney Mania is active on Treasure Coast
TOM PRESTOPNIK
Posted January 14, 2013

 — What do you get when you put five talented musicians into a room with nothing but instruments, music, history, talent, etc.? What you get is tons of music in the form of McCartney Mania.
The band is much more than just a Beatles tribute band. It is estimated there are about 1,000 of them worldwide.
Two years ago I was in Bangkok and listened to an all-Thai Beatles tribute band that was very good. McCartney Mania is different in that they feature almost exclusively Sir Paul’s music, with the Beatles, with Wings, and solo as “The Cute Beatle.”
The band has been together for about two years and has played up and down the Treasure Coast and will continue to do so in the future with newer show dates extending into Broward County and beyond.
Check local listings or McCartney Mania on Facebook for upcoming shows at the Sunrise Theatre in Fort Pierce, Civic Center in Port St. Lucie, or local restaurants in Martin and St. Lucie counties. I caught up with the band at a recent rehearsal and was able to talk to each member and get some historical background.
And in this corner, portraying Sir Paul McCartney, all the way from New Bedford, Mass., Sir Jack Maravell. (The crowd roars with approval). Not only does he look and sound like Sir Paul, but also plays a left-handed Hofner Bass just like the famous Beatle.
Like so many other rock and rollers, famous and not so famous, it all started on Feb. 9, 1964, when Maravell, like millions of young boys all across the USA saw the Beatles first time live on the Ed Sullivan Show, and decided that music was going to be their life from that moment forward.
He traveled around the USA playing Paul in Beatlemania for many years and finally settled down on the Treasure Coast.
Currently Maravell can be found days at the Fort Pierce Police Athletic League where he is a youth mentor, playing sports, teaching reading and acting as a counselor to the young people in Fort Pierce.
Besides playing bass, Maravell also play guitar and piano and is often found playing solo gigs at parties or in the local watering holes.
Keyboard man is ENT surgeon Dr. Jimmy Autin. Originally from Houma, La., Autin has played in many bands, usually on keys, but also proficient on the trumpet and guitar.
He remembers hearing Elvis and Buddy Holley on the radio before the Beatles and that started an interest in music for him.
Autin says that music has come a long way on the Treasure coast since he moved here 29 years ago. There are a lot more musicians, bands, and the quality has improved.
Many of the shows that McCartney Mania performs are benefit shows. Last year’s show at the Sunrise Theatre aided the Police Athletic League; this year’s show at the Sunrise on April 12 will benefit the Fort Pierce Family Meals Inc. At this stage in their lives, the band members agree that it’s all about the music and giving back to the community.
The guitar man, from Wooster, Mass., is Jackson Chiarelli, who by day is a pharmacist in Vero Beach.
Just like band-mate Maravell, Chiarelli’s life was turned around when he saw the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show in 1964. The all-around musician also has played piano and trumpet and claims the early rock and rollers such as Elvis and Buddy Holley, as well as Louis Prima, Sinatra and Dean Martin were his early influences.
Family singing and harmonizing came early to Chiarelli and helped to influence his musical life. He hopes to continue to develop his guitar skills and eventually get to write his own music.
The other guitar player is Scott Benge, known on the Treasure Coast for his years with the hard rocking band, SWS, and also for his solo appearances at parties and local clubs and restaurants.
His day job and night job are one in the same, that of a musician. Along with the guitar, he plays bass, baritone, banjo, trombone, drums, tuba and a pretty mean penny whistle which he’s trying to introduce into the Beatles music.
Benge, originally from Gainesville, credits his main musical influences as Joe Walsh of Eagles and The James Gang, guitar virtuoso Steve Vai, heavy metal band Rush’s Alex Lifeson and of course the Beatles.
At age 7, Benge started taking guitar lessons and after about three months the teacher told him that he knew as much as the teacher. The Cincinnati High School for the Performing Arts helped get him to where he is today. He plans to keep on playing as long as his body holds out and particularly enjoys the camaraderie with the other members of McCartney Mania.
The man who keeps everybody on the beat is drummer Dean Lopes from Rhode Island.
Lopes, coming from a musical family, came out of the womb ready to play percussion. His father was a horn player in a marching band. He says that music is his full-time job and his part-time job is installing AV music systems for the home theater market.
Other accomplishments have included drumming for the San Francisco-based band, the Tubes, writing and playing music for The Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Entertainment Tonight and HBO’s Entourage, and being a band mate with Robert Tepper. His musical training developed at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. His major drumming influences are Danny Seraphine from Chicago, Billy Cobham, Buddy Rich, and of course Ringo.
Adding up all the years of playing practicing, lessons and learning, these five musicians have amassed about 224 years at their craft. And to listen to any one of their stories, they’re just getting started.
You’re all in for a special treat when you go to any venue to hear and see them perform. Confirmed dates include Jan 26 at the Port St. Lucie Civic Center and April 12 at the Sunrise Theatre in Fort Pierce. A splendid time is guaranteed for all.
