'You Gave Me The Answer' – Brendan from Australia asks…

www.PaulMcCartney.com

Imagine what your life might be like if you had made a few different decisions. For instance, what if you'd taken on a different job, or you had attended a different school / university, or maybe learnt to play a different musical instrument.

Here at PaulMcCartney.com we’re still dreaming of one day becoming an astronaut. (NASA, feel free to give us a call!)

Paul had his musical appetite from a young age. That passion for music has led him along a path we all know and love, and it's a path we're very grateful he went down! There have been a lot of adventures along the way, but imagine how different things might be now if Paul had been given a geometry set for his birthday instead of that trumpet!

Brendan Browne from Australia wonders what direction Paul's life might take if he were to go back to school. He asks:

“If you became a full time student, what would you study?”

We spoke with Paul to find out. He replied:

"Good question, thank you Brendan. I love reading and would be interested in studying English literature or history. Or computer studies, which is such a useful skill."

(Sounds like Paul might be after our job soon!)

We'd love to know what you would choose to study and why. Tell us in the comments below…

The Rutles have announced details of a UK tour to take place in May.

The Beatles parody group, which was originally formed as a spoof by Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band man Neil Innes and Monty Python comedian Eric Idle, will play 19 shows starting at Exeter Phoenix on May 7 and wrapping up at Liverpool O2 Academy 2 later in the month (May 31).

The band, jokingly referred to as the Pre-Fab Four, were initially conceived for a sketch in Idle's TV show Rutland Weekend Television. They went on to star in the film All You Need Is Cash, which features a cameo from George Harrison, and released a number of albums.

In a press release co-written by Innes, he revealed that his alter-ego Ron Nasty and drummer John Halsey (known in The Rutles as Barrington Womble) would be the only original members of the group taking part in the shows. "It is hereby agreed that, in as much as two of the Artistes heretofore and informally known as 'The Rutles', 'The Pre-Fab Four' or 'Dirk, Nasty, Stig and Barry', shall be appearing live and in person as 'Themselves' (namely Neil and John)," it says.

"And whilst they are appearing as ‘Themselves’ they do so solemnly and without prejudice hereby undertake to use their best endeavors not to make frivolous use of any former silly name, no matter whomsoever, whatsoever, whenever, for ever and ever.”

The Rutles will play:

Beach Boys' Mike Love Honors George Harrison With Unreleased Track
'Pisces Brothers' celebrates Beatles guitarist's birthday and recalls transformative trip to India
By JASON NEWMAN
FEBRUARY 25, 2014

On what would have been his 71st birthday, George Harrison gets honored by friend and fellow musician Mike Love on the previously unreleased track "Pisces Brothers."

Written in 2004, but released for the first time today, "Pisces Brothers" was inspired by a trip the Beach Boys co-founder and the Beatles took to India in 1968 to learn from the spiritual teachings of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Donovan and Mia Farrow also accompanied the group.

"This being the 50th anniversary of The Beatles coming to America, I wanted to commemorate this incredibly significant trip we all took together to India, at the Maharishi’s invitation," Love said in a statement. "It was enormously influential on all of us, most especially George. The song is really sentimental for me, and meant to honor George Harrison’s remarkable contribution to music. And how, in this one moment in time, we got together, as the song says, not [for] fortune or for fame, but for enlightenment.” The title refers to the astrological sign the pair share, with Love continuing to practice the Transcendental Meditation techniques learned in India to this day.

Mike Love & George Harrison

"Pisces Brothers" blends soft rock, New Age and sitars with Love's direct memories of his time with Harrison. "A flood of memories come to mind/Of happy birthdays back in time," sings the Beach Boys member. "Such precious moments/Now in the past/Music and memories are all that last."

Love and the Beatles traveled to Rishikish, India in 1968, five months after the latter first met the Maharishi. In a 2013 interview with the Guardian, Love described his experiences in India. "The 60s was a time of unthinkabilities," Love said. "It was such a special time, and the Maharishi was a great host and guru. I was at the breakfast table when Paul McCartney came down with his acoustic guitar playing 'Back in the USSR.' I said, 'You ought to put something in about all the girls around Russia,' and he did." Love claimed to swear off drugs after his involvement with Transcendental Meditation, a choice that would cause a rift in the Beach Boys when contrasted with other members' frequent drug use.

Three months after Love's trip to India, the Beach Boys embarked on a co-headlining U.S. tour with Maharishi to help him establish meditation centers around the country. The show consisted of the band playing a full set before ceding the stage to Maharishi for a lecture on spirituality. The tour lasted seven shows before being cancelled due to lack of interest.

Fans, friends honor Beatle George Harrison

www.examiner.com
They say it's his birthday: Fans, friends honor Beatle George Harrison
By Steve Marinucci . Beatles Examiner
February 25, 2014

The Feb. 25 birthday of George Harrison is being celebrated by fans and friends around the world. Richard Porter of Beatles In London.com, who offers walking tours of Beatles sites in the UK, told Beatles Examiner he added a special George Harrison section to his tours today with some special George-related stories on his tours.

“Like the time when the Rutles were filing on the Abbey Road crossing and were mobbed by fans. They didn't recognize George, who was standing by the crossing looking on,” he said. Porter said also repeated the story of how George Martin gave the Beatle a long lecture after their first recording session and then asked if there was anything they didn't like. “For a start, I don't like your tie,” George quipped.

George Harrison's official website kicked off the Feb. 25 celebration of his 71st birthday by announcing on Twitter today it was paying tribute to him with a short video, “Remembering George,” available on their website, that features rare home movies.

Fans in the U.S. have also several events planned. As we mentioned in our week ahead Beatles calendar, fans will gather tonight at 6 p.m. PT at George Harrison's Hollywood Walk of Fame star on North Vine Street in Hollywood, CA., for music and refreshments, including a special cake-cutting by KLOS-FM “Breakfast With the Beatles” host Chris Carter.

In New York City, the B.B. King Blues Club & Grill will present the George Harrison Birthday Show with the Godfrey Townshend Band at 7:30 p.m. ET. The event will also feature Joshua Greene, author of “Here Comes the Sun: The Spiritual and Musical Journey of George Harrison,” who will offer films and narration.

The second annual George Harrison birthday celebration will be held at 8 p.m. at the Abilene Bar and Lounge, 153 Liberty Pole Way, Rochester, N.Y. There is no cover charge. The event will feature music by Don Christiano with a little help from friends Tom Passamonte, Steve Lyons, Ray Paul, Steve Tortoretti, Bob Martin, Spencer Christiano, Dan Schmitt, Kerry Regan, Todd Bradley, Rita Coulter, John Dady, Steve Piper and more.

Beach Boy Mike Love has also released a new musical tribute to George Harrison called “Pisces Brothers.” You can hear it on the Rolling Stone website.

And, of course, there's Mike Geraghty's wonderful tribute to George that sounds an awfully lot like him.

Snow problem! Sir Paul McCartney hones his skiing skills in the French Alps while on holiday with wife Nancy Shevell
By JAMES LEYFIELD
PUBLISHED: 25 February 2014

He's known for being hugely successful as a singer.
And at the age of 71 Sir Paul McCartney has been perfecting another one of his many talents by taking to the French Alps with a personal instructor to hone his skiing skills.
If you could win prizes for looking like the part then The Beatles singer, who is enjoying a break in Megeve, France, with his wife Nancy Shevell, would become a professional in no time.

Paul was pictured looking every inch the esteemed skier in his all-black winter wear as he went for a lesson on Thursday.
He looked in focused mood as he headed onto the snow carrying his ski poles and flanked by his personal instructor, who had skis in hand.
While on the slopes, Paul looked like he had the technique down to a tee as he sped across the snow.

Despite Paul's new hobby, his wife Nancy, 53, doesn't appear to be quite as keen as her husband to take to the ice.
According to The Sun newspaper, she has been steering clear of the icy conditions by staying in their private lodge when the singer heads out to test his skiing skills.
The skiing trip couldn't have come at a better time for Paul, who has been busy in the US for the past month making a special TV show, The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute to The Beatles, to commemorate 50 years since the group first appeared on American television.

Happy holiday: Nancy Shevell is also on holiday with Paul in the Alps but has reportedly preferred to stay in their private lodge rather than hit the slopes

During the show, Paul and his bandmate Ringo Starr paid tribute to late Beatle John Lennon - who was shot and killed in New York in 1980 - and George Harrison, who died of lung cancer in 2001.
Drummer Ringo 73, told the audience during the programme: 'We were in a band called The Beatles and whenever we play George and John are always with us.'
The show aired on CBS on February 9 and featured performances from the likes of Stevie Wonder, Keith Urban, Katy Perry, John Mayer and Alicia Keys.
Paul's ex-wife, Heather Mills, is a paralympic skiier but was forced to pull out of the 2014 Winter Paralympics because of a leg injury.
Heather - who lost her leg below the knee in a road accident 20 years ago - won a silver medal for skiing in a New Zealand Winter Games slalom event at Coronet Peak in Queenstown in 2013.

The Rutles Announce 2014 U.K. Tour

ultimateclassicrock.com
Beatles Parody Band The Rutles Announce 2014 U.K. Tour
by Dave Swanson
February 24, 2014

The Rutles, aka the Pre-Fab Four, pioneers of the ‘Rutland Sound,’ have found their “get up and go” and are returning to the concert stage. They will play 19 dates — listed below — across the U.K. in May.
Of course, the Rutles were born from the minds of Neil Innes of the Bonzo Dog Band, and Eric Idle of Monty Python fame. In 1976, the duo created the Rutles as a send-up of the Beatles for part of their BBC2 sketch show, ‘Rutland Weekend Television.’ Ultimately, the spoof led to a full-length movie, ‘All You Need Is Cash,’ which was broadcast on U.S. television in 1978. It featured note-perfect pastiches like ‘Ouch!,’ ‘I Must Be in Love‘ and ‘Cheese and Onions,’ and even a cameo from George Harrison.
In typical Neil Innes fashion, a press release regarding the upcoming European tour states, “It is hereby agreed that, in as much as two of the Artistes heretofore and informally known as ‘The Rutles’, ‘The Pre-Fab Four’ or ‘Dirk, Nasty, Stig and Barry’, shall be appearing live and in person as ‘Themselves’ (namely Neil and John) and whilst they are appearing as ‘Themselves’ they do so solemnly and without prejudice hereby undertake to use their best endeavors not to make frivolous use of any former silly name, no matter whomsoever, whatsoever, whenever, for ever and ever.”
In other words, the only ‘original members’ taking part in this venture are Neil Innes (aka Ron Nasty) and drummer John Halsey (aka Barrington Womble, shortened to “Barry Wom”). Taking a jab at the question of who actually owns the rights to the Rutles name, Innes said on his website, “Those songs are mine – I wrote them! Why can’t we just go out and sing them?”  “Maybe we could call it ‘Rutalot,’” proposed Halsey, a jab at Idle’s Broadway hit, ‘Spamalot.’
The connection between Innes and the Beatles goes back to 1967 when the Bonzo Dog Band and the Beatles became fast friends, even appearing in the ‘Magical Mystery Tour Film.’ Paul McCartney also produced their single, ‘I’m The Urban Spaceman’ under the pseudonym of Apollo C Vermouth. The film also features cameos from Mick Jagger and Paul Simon among others.
The tour announcement continues, “However, and nevertheless, they reserve the same human rights as any honest Ticket Holder to be free, and at liberty, to make use of any of the aforesaid names as they see fit – in so far as, and provided that, any such said Ticket Holder, or person of wisdom and taste, is deemed to be at all times within the boundaries of the Public Domain or any other such place, area or location as defined by the Real World.”

Yoko Ono translates ‘Sukiyaki’ hit song into English for new release

Yoko Ono translates ‘Sukiyaki’ hit song into English for new release
By SHIGEYORI MIYAMOTO/ Staff Writer
February 20, 2014

To mark the 50th anniversary since "Sukiyaki" sizzled to the top of the U.S. pop charts, artist Yoko Ono has translated the Japanese lyrics into English for a new version.

British pop singer Olly Murs sang Ono's translated version at the Akasaka Britz live house in Tokyo's Akasaka district on Feb. 18 for the first time in public.

Ono said she wanted to convey the meaning of the original lyrics after being asked to do so by the eldest son of the late composer of the song.

“I have accepted the request (to translate the song into English), hoping the song’s spirit will encourage the people of the world,” she said.

At the live house, Murs gently sang "Look at the Sky," which begins, “Look at the sky as you walk through life/ So the tears won’t overflow your heart.”

“Ue o Muite Aruko,” (I'll walk looking up at the sky) written by Rokusuke Ei and composed by Hachidai Nakamura, was sung by Kyu Sakamoto and released in Japan in 1961.

The late singer's version, released overseas under the title "Sukiyaki," soared to No. 1 in 1963 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The song was renamed after the popular hot pot meal to be more easily recognizable to English speakers, although it had nothing to do with the lyrics telling a melancholy ballad of young love.

Since then, cover versions in English and other languages have appeared, many with lyrics far different in meaning from Ei’s original ones.

More than 10 million copies of the original song and the cover versions are estimated to have been sold in more than 70 countries.

Rikimaru Nakamura, 50, the eldest son of the song’s composer, asked Ono to translate "Ue o Muite Aruko" into English. Murs was selected to perform it.

“Sorrow, solitude, and hope that lies ahead--the Japanese have felt empathy for the song,” Nakamura said. “I want foreign listeners to understand the original meaning.”

John Lennon 'nonsense list' up for sale

John Lennon 'nonsense list' up for sale
Anglesey owner of the abecedarium met the former Beatle in Liverpool
By David Powell
21 Feb 2014

A unique “nonsense” list by former Beatle John Lennon is being sold by its Anglesey owner.

Michael Poynter Adams has the original, 1969 printer’s proof of the list, which has 26 letters and nonsensical words alongside each one in Lennon’s handwriting. It’s expected to fetch at least £6,000 at the Colwyn Bay auction on Wednesday.

In what’s known as an abecedarium, the dyslexic and quirky star wrote: “A is for Parrot, B is for glasses, C is for plastic, D is for Doris...”

The list later became the introduction to a controversial set of 14 erotic lithographs of him and Yoko Ono called Bag One.

Mr Adams, 69, who met Lennon while browsing for records in Liverpool in his pre-Beatles days, later coincidentally worked at a printers and that’s how he acquired the print.

He said: “I am selling it with great reluctance but it is not on display at home and we are moving to a smaller house, so it has to go. It’s a significant piece of music history and I hope it goes to a good home.”

Mr Adam, who has previously loaned the print to the National Library of Wales and Liverpool Hope University, added: “I first met John Lennon and the Beatles before they were famous in 1961. I used to buy my records, rare imports mainly from France, from NEMS in Liverpool and Brian Epstein took my orders.

“John and the other Beatles were often in the shop. Although John was older, we shared an interest in rock’n’roll – there was the same synergy between us.

“By sheer coincidence, later in life I was working at Curwen’s where the Bag One lithographs were printed and I was told that when John and Yoko arrived in their flamboyant Rolls Royce to see the first prints being produced, there were girls banging on the studio windows outside trying to attract his attention.

“The printer’s proof of the abecedarium was the precursor for the whole series, the start of it all and the rarest to survive from the printing process. Because he knew of my friendship with Lennon, when he retired and was clearing out his files the master printer responsible for the lithographs gave me the proof and I’ve cherished it ever since.”

The abecedarium will be on public view at Rogers Jones saleroom in Abergele Road, Colwyn Bay, from 2pm-4pm on Sunday, 1pm-7pm on Monday and on the morning of the sale which starts at 10.30am. More details on 01492 532176.

Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Jim Morrison to Appear on Postage Stamps

www.rollingstone.com
Jimi Hendrix, John Lennon, Jim Morrison to Appear on Postage Stamps
Michael Jackson, Janis Joplin, James Brown stamps also in the works
By KORY GROW
FEBRUARY 21, 2014

Philatelists rejoice: The U.S. Postal Service will unravel several lines of celebrity-adorned stamps over the next two years, with subjects ranging from Apple founder Steve Jobs to gay rights activist Harvey Milk. It will also be offering numerous music-related stamps, including Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix this year and a James Brown stamp next year. 2015 will also see a re-release of Elvis Presley's 29-cent tribute from 1993 — the Postal Service's best-selling stamp ever — according to The Washington Post. A stamp for John Lennon has been planned for an as-yet-unannounced date.

As published in a missive by the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee (via the Post), this year will also see the arrival of stamps honoring NBA champ Wilt Chamberlain, undisclosed celebrity chefs, "America's Most Loved Pets" and Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Next year, the Postal Service will release stamps for Johnny Carson, Ingrid Bergman and the gang from Peanuts.

The document also names a number of people and characters who will be honored with stamps sometime in the future. Among them are general music-related stamps honoring guitars and hip-hop, as well as several new entries in the U.S.P.S.'s Music Icons series, including Lennon, Bill Monroe, Jim Morrison, Sam Cooke, Tammy Wynette, "Fats" Waller, Freddie Fender, Roy Orbison, Sarah Vaughan and Willie Dixon. Michael Jackson will also be getting his own stamp that is not part of the Icons series.

Other stamps planned for a later date include Barack Obama, both Bush presidents, Bill Clinton, 20th Century humorists, Ansel Adams, a Black Heritage series, science fiction writers, pro football, Hanna-Barbera characters, Dora the Explorer and more.

A U.S.P.S. rep told the Post that stamp subjects may change at any time. The Postal Service is looking to attract younger stamp collectors with some of these new additions; because some of these proposed stamps betray previous stamp guidelines (such as the subject being American, in the case of John Lennon), this new direction has become controversial among older philatelists.

McCartney vuelve a Sudamérica y negocian show en Santiago

McCartney vuelve a Sudamérica y negocian show en Santiago

The NME Awards 2014 with Austin, Texas has announced that Paul will be honoured with a special one-off award, the Songwriter’s Songwriter, and will be there to collect the award in person, at the upcoming ceremony.

When NME asked the world’s leading songwriters to nominate the best practitioner of their craft for the one-off Songwriter’s Songwriter award, time and time again they chose Paul. For setting an unmatchable pace in modern music, he’s undoubtedly the songwriter’s songwriter.
Paul is a talent to rank amongst the titans of music – he is indisputably the greatest songwriter alive today, if not of all time.

NME editor Mike Williams says:

"We've spoken to the biggest and best musicians around, and they've told us: Paul McCartney is the world's ultimate songwriter. Paul's enduring and stunning talent is worth celebrating, and I'm incredibly honoured that NME are giving him the special, one-of-its-kind Songwriter's Songwriter award to recognise that.”
McCartney will collect his award in person at the O2 Academy Brixton on February 26.
