Friday 3rd August 2012
A PIECE of musical history has been unveilled at an East Lancashire gallery.
On special loan to Accrington’s Haworth Art Gallery is the amplifier and speaker originally used by Beatle George Harrison while recording Revolver and Sergeant Pepper. The exhibition also features a hand-built copy of Paul McCartney’s Hofner Bass guitar The display is part of the gallery’s new exhibition ‘Summer and the 60s’.
The amp and cabinet are from a private collection and were discovered to be George’s in February 2011 when they were taken to bits for some service work.
Markings were found on the equipment showing it to have belonged to The Beatles. Curator Yvonne Robbins said the gallery was thrilled to have access to such a sought-after item and credited co-ordinator Bernie Fullalove’s music contacts for bringing the item to Accrington.
Bernie, who plays with band The Allstars, said: “It’s astonishing what you can find when you ask around. I did an exhibition last year as part of my degree and the Haworth approached me this year.”
The exhibition also has a wide variety of music and memorabilia, including some from East Lancashire 60s bands including So On and So Forth, Lennie and the Teenbeats and the Warriors (of whom Jon Anderson was a member) that played support to many of the stars of the time.
The exhibition runs until Sunday September 23.
