Paul McCartney rocks Penn State

"You wanna keep rocking?” Sir Paul McCartney asked a packed Bryce Jordan Center Thursday night. “Alright.”
After three hours and two encores, that’s just what everyone in the BJC did.
Shortly after 8:20 p.m. McCartney graced the stage in his signature white button down shirt and black jacket, beginning the show with The Beatles classic “Eight Days a Week.”
“We’re going to do a little old, a little new and a little in between,” McCartney said to the audience.
Songs ranged from “Queenie Eye ” off his most recent 2013 album “New” to “Maybe I’m Amazed” from “Wings over America.”
For Casey McDonald, Class of 2013, and Matt Rake, the three hour trip from their home in Philadelphia was worth it to hear “Maybe I’m Amazed.”
“That’s our song,” Rake said.
The couple initially met through their mutual interest in The Beatles when Rake’s cell phone rang with a Beatles song as a ringtone more than four years ago.
“We’ve never seen McCartney in concert before,” McDonald said. “But it’s Paul and Penn State—we had to go.”
Like the show’s setlist, the audience itself was diverse — ranging from children to college students and adults alike.
Austin Cassidy said he believes there won’t be any crowds this diverse after musicians like McCartney stop touring.
“He completely changed music,” Cassidy (freshman-finance) said. “You have to respect [McCartney] and his musical stature. I can’t even comprehend what he means to the rest of the world.”
For many, this wasn’t the first time they attended a McCartney concert. Cassidy attended a 2014 concert in Pittsburgh. Dan Huber (freshman-division of undergraduate studies) said he saw McCartney this past summer at Firefly in the front row and it was “everything.”
Dawn Collings, of Mercersburg, PA, said she saw McCartney in 2014 with her daughters and “couldn’t believe” she was getting the chance to see him again.
“He’s an icon,” Collings said. “You really can’t get much bigger than [McCartney].”
The concert itself lived up to it’s larger than life performer with bursting fireworks at the chorus of “Live and Let Die” and a rising stage that towered over the floor section during “Blackbird.”
Fans travelled from all over the world to see McCartney take the stage in the Happy Valley. Kyle Odell, of Seattle, said the “opportunity to get tickets [to see McCartney] and take a trip” was enough to travel so far.
Ariana Gomez spent her 16th birthday at the concert and was “shocked” when she was brought up on stage during McCartney’s first encore to get her poster signed. Her poster said “For my 16th birthday I chose Paul over a new car.”
Gomez, of Florida, said it was “amazing” and something she will “never forget.”
Joy Cohen, of Philadelphia, has attended every tour since 1964. Last night her sign caught the eyes of McCartney’s film crew. Cohen joined McCartney on stage to get her arm autographed, which she said she is going to get tattooed over.
“This is the best night of my life,” she said. “I thought I was going to die.”
