Tucked away in the special features on the making of the Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales film that came out on DVD and Blu-ray Oct. 3 is a short segment called “Wings Over the Caribbean” that will be of interest to Paul McCartney fans.

In the film, McCartney plays Uncle Jack, a pirate relative of Capt. Jack Sparrow. In keeping with the tone of the film, it's a very light-hearted role. The two are reunited in a dungeon when Jack Sparrow (Depp) is captured and brought in and Uncle Jack (McCartney) is already a prisoner in a cell. “Uncle Jack!” says Depp, when he hears him singing an old song (and not the Rod Stewart hit) “Maggie Mae.” “Jackie Boy! How's it going?” answers McCartney. “I can't complain really,” says Depp. McCartney answers, “I've been waiting all morning for a beating but the service is terrible.”

“Paul McCartney is an icon. He's one of the greatest musicians and performers alive,” says producer Jerry Bruckheimer. “And we're very fortunate that he's friends with Johnny. Johnny has done favors for him and he's returned a favor by being in this movie.” Those favors include appearances in McCartney music videos, including “Queenie Eye,” “My Valentine” and “Early Days.”

“I've known Johnny a while. I've always admired him as Jack Sparrow,” says McCartney in the segment. “And he said, 'You know, I'd love you to be in the next one.' What, me, a pirate? And he says, 'Yeah, you can do it and have a lot of fun.' So he wrote me in.”

In addition to talking about the role, McCartney also does some singing, both in the movie and in an extra version on the DVD recorded when there was silence on the set and the only thing heard is McCartney's voice. This extra version is not in the movie.

“Paul McCartney was a dream to work with,” says Joachim Rønning, one of the film's directors. “Jack Sparrow's family tree is pretty cool having Keith Richards as his dad and Paul McCartney as his uncle.”

Petty passed away at the age of 66

Beatles stars Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr have paid tribute to the late Tom Petty.

Rock icon Petty suffered a cardiac arrest at his home in California on Sunday (October 1) and died in hospital yesterday (October 2) at the age of 66.

As tributes to pour in from Petty’s musical contemporaries, McCartney and Starr have both sent messages of condolence via Twitter.

“Sending love to Tom Petty and his family at this difficult time,” McCartney wrote, before adding: “so sad to hear of his passing. What a lovely, intelligent and talented man he was.”

Starr, meanwhile, wrote: “God bless Tom Petty, peace and love to his family”. He added: “I’m sure going to miss you Tom”. See those tweets below.

Petty’s death has been confirmed by Tony Dimitriades, longtime manager of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Dimitriades confirmed Petty’s death on behalf of the performer’s family.

Petty formed The Heartbreakers in 1976, and their self-titled debut album was released the same year. It featured Petty’s classic song ‘American Girl’. Petty’s breakthrough came with his band’s third album ‘Damn the Torpedoes’ in 1979. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers last released an album in 2014 in the form of 13th LP ‘Hypnotic Eye’.

As well as his career with the Heartbreakers, Petty also co-founded supergroup the Traveling Wilburys with Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison.





Along with the tributes from Petty’s musical contemporaries, his daughter Kimberly Violette also shared her experiences of her father, recalling how she had been present at Petty’s last ever gig at the Hollywood Bowl last week.

“One week ago today I was watching my dad play we showed up rushed to our seats”, she said.

“I got stoned had a beer the lights went dark ,sat watching realizing I grew up on these songs. Everyone grew up on these songs. This is real American Art made from the roots of real people who deeply love life, my father loves music more than anything and always put music first.

Tom Petty R.I.P. Some people are just born cool. Such a legend. I was lucky to cross paths a few times.

I was very lucky to hang out with him in the 60s when he came to London because he kind of launched his career from London even though he was an American guy. We wanted to make our first demo record. Our very first recording ever. We found a little studio in Liverpool and we went there to record it. It cost 5 pounds. There were five of us in the group at the time. It was John, George, Me, Colin on drums and Druff on piano."
"The deal was, we'd each pay a pound and we'd keep it for a week each and then rotate it. John kept it for a week and gave it to George, he kept it for a week and gave it to me. I gave it to Colin, he kept for a week and Duff kept it for 20 years. Then he sold it back to me at a profit."

"We got a contract and he invited us to come from Liverpool to London to Abby Road Studios. We were kids in our early 20s. We were pretty nervous. We were going to do "Love Me Do" for him. John had the "Love Me Do" line. Then he played the harmonica. But Martin wanted the harmonica wanted to come in on the one. John couldn't do two things at the same time so Martin turns to me and says Paul, would you mind singing the "Love Me Do" line. I said, uh, OK. I'm nervous already. Now I'm terrified. Even to this day when I hear the record I can still hear the nerves in my voice. But not tonight!"

Me and John were doing that one afternoon when we spoted a taxi going by with a couple of our friends inside. It was Mick and and Keith of the Rolling Stones."

After performing "Back in the U.S.S.R." We were actually the first rock n' roll band to play in Red Square. Backstage there was a lot of Russian government guys hanging out. Free vodka. The Defense Minister comes up to me and says Paul, first record I ever bought was "Love Me Do." This other guy comes up, a big tall guy, he's also from the government, he says we learn to speak English from listening to Beatles records. He looks me right in the eye and goes, hello goodbye. So close. It's true."
