Beatles fans' Love Me Do world record attempt
Beatles fans are being urged to come together later to set a world record marking 50 years since the release of the Fab Four's first hit.
5 October 2012
The aim is to break the record of 897 voices "singing in a round" by performing Love Me Do. The record was set in Chicago, USA, in 2011.
The world record attempt will take place 12:00 BST at the Pier Head in Liverpool.
Released on 5 October 1962, Love Me Do reached number 17 in the charts.
Singing in a round involves two or more voices singing the same melody but with one voice starting at a different time so that different parts of the tune coincide at different times.
'Record-breaking royalty'
The record-breaking attempt has been created by the Beatles Story exhibition and Albert Dock and has been backed by Liverpool City Council.
It is part of a year-long programme of events across Merseyside to mark 50 years of The Beatles.
"We would encourage people to play their part in what we hope will be a record-breaking event for Liverpool," said Duncan Frazer, commercial and marketing director of the Liverpool City Region Local Enterprise Partnership.
Marco Frigatti, head of record management at Guinness World Records said: "The Beatles are record-breaking royalty.
"Not only are they the best-selling music group in history, the band holds the honour of being the creators of the first song ever beamed into space."
The current record was set by people singing "Danke Schoen", marking the 25th anniversary of the movie "Ferris Bueller's Day Off".
Love Me Do was released on 5 October 1962.
