Paul McCartney is among the nominees for “The People's Choice Awards 2016” that were announced Nov. 3. McCartney is named in the Favorite Music Icon category. Also competing for the award in that category are Madonna, Prince, Steven Tyler and Stevie Wonder. Madonna is a two-time winner of a People's Choice Award and has been nominated a total of eight times, including twice for the 2016 awards in this category and for Favorite Female Artist.

Voting for this year's selections started today at the People's Choice Awards website and on Facebook and mobile applications and runs through 11:59 p.m. EST Dec. 3. The People’s Choice Awards, in its 42nd year, is voted on entirely by the public for fan favorites in movies, music, television and digital categories. The digital awards category is new to the awards this year. The winners will be revealed during the live broadcast of “People's Choice Awards 2016” to take place at the Microsoft Theatre L.A. Live on CBS-TV on Jan. 6, 2016 from 9 to 11 p.m. ET/PT. Tickets to the awards show are now available for fans to purchase through the AXS website.

Nominees were revealed this morning at the Paley Center for Media in Beverly Hills. Jane Lynch of “Angel From Hell” hosted the announcement. Also on hand to reveal the nominees in the music, film, television and digital categories were celebrities Betsy Brandt (“Life in Pieces”), Marcia Gay Harden (“Code Black”), Raza Jaffrey (“Code Black”),Zachary Levi (“Heroes Reborn”), Christina Milian (“Grandfathered”), Abigail Spencer (“True Detective”) and Ming-Na Wen (“Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), plus executive producer Mark Burnett.

The Beatles will release their first-ever DVD compilation of videos, "1," globally on Friday. The set, available both in regular DVD and Blu-ray, will feature 27 videos in the single-disc version and 50 in the deluxe three-disc set, which will also include a remixed/remastered "1" CD that will be available separately. Ringo Starr sent out a tweet about the new product on Monday on his @ringostarrmusic account, with a picture of the set and a comment that said, "123 if you love the Beatles you need this because it's great. Peace and love."

They say good things come to those who wait — and this is definitely a moment fans have been waiting for!

Nominees for People’s Choice Awards 2016 were announced earlier today at the Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles.

With more than 72 million votes cast across music, movies, TV, and digital, the run-up to the 2016 show is already shaping up to be incredibly contentious. Making the race for a coveted trophy even more exciting? A number of nominees snagged multiple votes.

Among them is People’s Choice Awards first-timer, The Weeknd, who leads the list of nominees with a whopping five nods, including “Favorite Male Artist” and “Favorite Album” for Beauty Behind the Madness. On the flip side, Madonna, who is a two-time People’s Choice Awards winner, is nominated for both “Favorite Music Icon,” which pits her against Paul McCartney, Prince, Steven Tyler, and Stevie Wonder, and “Favorite Female Artist,” a category which finds her facing off against Demi Lovato, Lana Del Rey, Selena Gomez, and Taylor Swift.

As far as triple threats are concerned however, that honor goes solely to Dwayne Johnson, the only nominee to receive recognition across three different genres. Johnson, aka “The Rock,” is nominated in movies for “Favorite Action Movie Actor,” in TV for “Favorite Cable TV Actor,” and in digital for “Favorite Social Media Celebrity.”

Meanwhile, though Grey’s Anatomy lost McDreamy this year, it seems to have gained even more love from fans. The series is the most-nominated TV show, with an impressive six nods. Coming in just slightly above that is Avengers: Age of Ultron, the top movie nominee with a total of seven nods.

You can vote for the People’s Choice Awards 2016 nominee that you think deserves to walk away with a trophy on PeoplesChoice.com, the People’s Choice Facebook page, and/or the People’s Choice Awards mobile app.

Check out the full list of People’s Choice Awards 2016 nominees below!

The newest album of guitarist and singer John Pizzarelli came about at the suggestion of none other than former Beatle Paul McCartney.

Midnight McCartney–which was released in September and some of whose numbers will be performed in a new cabaret act, by Pizzarelli and his wife, the singer Jessica Molaskey, debuting tonight at New York’s Café Carlyle–features McCartney’s lesser-known songs.

In May 2014, McCartney wrote to Pizzarelli—who had made a CD in 1996 called John Pizzarelli Meets the Beatles, and later played guitar on McCartney’s Kisses on the Bottom album and backed him on several live performances, including the Grammy Awards–to tell him, “I got an idea in my head.  It might be interesting for you to do a few of my songs that are lesser-known than some of the others.  I realize this may be a little immodest, if not pushy.  I imagine the songs would include post-Beatles melodies of mine like ‘Love in the Open Air,’ ‘Junk,’ ‘Warm and Beautiful,’ and, possibly, ‘My Valentine.’”

John Pizzarelli and his wife, Jessica Molaskey, are performing in a new cabaret at the Cafe Carlyle in New York featuring songs from their latest album, "Midnight McCartney."

Concluding his letter to Pizzarelli, McCartney wrote, “The attraction for me is lesser-known tunes done in a mellow jazz style, and, if it gets some traction, maybe the album could be titled ‘Midnight McCartney.’  As I said, this may tickle your fancy, or you may decide these are the ramblings of a deranged composer with too much time on his hands.”

Inspired by McCartney’s suggestion, Pizzarelli, Molaskey (who eventually co-produced the CD) and pianist Larry Goldings dug through McCartney’s albums from the past 50-odd years to identify songs that could be reharmonized and adapted for Pizzarelli’s style.

The Nation's favourite Beatles number one.

TV alert: As part of the promotion for the re-release of The Beatles '1' album on CD and the new BluRay/DVD editions, ITV in the UK has scheduled a new two hour programme called 'The Nation's Favourite Beatles Number One' on Wednesday 11th November at 8:00pm.

The programme uses extraordinary footage from a number of sources, including ITV's own archives and rare and exclusive footage from Apple – from the only surviving clips of the band playing in Liverpool’s iconic Cavern club in 1962, to the band’s final, public performance on the roof of the Apple building seven years later.

The programme also features appearances from Beatles fans like Michael Palin, Sandie Shaw, David Tennant, Twiggy, Björn Ulvaeus and Sue Johnston, who was a Cavern club regular herself, talking about the tracks.

Across 120 minutes, this prime-time celebration of the biggest and most influential band the world has ever seen uses extraordinary footage from a number of sources, including ITV's own archives and rare and exclusive footage from the Beatles’ company Apple Corps – from the only surviving clips of the band playing in Liverpool’s iconic Cavern club in 1962, to the band’s final, public performance on the roof of the Apple building seven years later.

Produced by Shiver, ‘The Nation’s Favourite’ format has previously counted down the hits of musical sensations and genres including Abba, Elvis, Queen, and Motown.

The Nation's Favourite Beatles Number One is commissioned for ITV by Priya Singh, Commissioning Editor, Factual and Richard Klein, Director of Factual.

Commissioning Editor Priya Singh said: “The Beatles are a band that have defined popular culture and music for decades and so we're thrilled to be celebrating their hits on ITV. Everyone's got a favourite Beatles number one - but which is yours and which will be the nation's?”

The programme is executive produced by Mark Robinson and produced by Stephen McGinn and John Piper.

Executive Producer Mark Robinson said: “The Beatles have had more number one singles in the UK than any other band. It’s a tough call to even start predicting what might be voted the nation’s favourite.

“It’s extraordinary to think that The Beatles’ output changed so dramatically within seven years – these are 27 songs that chart that extraordinary revolution in popular music”.

Producer of a large number of The Beatles' promotional clips was Tony Bramwell, for The Beatles' film company Subafilms which later became Apple films. He has also been interviewed for the programme, talking about the "litte films I made".

He added: "It’s extraordinary to think that The Beatles’ output changed so dramatically within seven years – these are 27 songs that chart that extraordinary revolution in popular music."

The music from the programme will be available on a new DVD featuring restored videos for each song and around 200 minutes in additional bonus material, including promotional films and videos.

The Beatles"Penny Lane" (restored video)

As previously reported, the Beatles' best-selling greatest hits compilation 1 will be getting treated to an expanded reissue that features the finest of the Fab Four's music videos.

And while 1+ doesn't hit shelves until next week, you can watch a restored version of the "Penny Lane" video right now. Follow along with the sideburned, moustachioed men as they trot around town and take afternoon tea in the video — which, despite looking clearer and more vibrant than ever, is still just as charmingly ridiculous as the original.

The new set is due out on November 6 through Apple Corps/UMG. Watch the video for "Penny Lane" below.

Filming "Penny Lane".

So here it is, the new "Penny Lane" video. This video has been rescued from a positive film with faded colours. And the restoration crew has indeed been able to correct the colours, although they are perhaps more subdued than we remember from the old 2-inch U-matic video tape the previous restoration came from. The skin tones vary a bit throughout but in general, the Beatles look winterly pale and their bright (newly colourised?) red coats make the contrast stand out even more.

New insert.
It also looks like they have inserted a few shots from the trimmings, which look more like a natural colour. Does the shot above of Lennon on horseback look familiar to you? It's nowhere to be found in the video that was made from the U-matic video tape in 1992, it wasn't in the original video from 1967, and here in the new version it appears at 1:53.

As for the new stereo mix, renowned remaster engineer Steve Hoffman posted this comment on his own site:
"Penny Lane remix? Sterile, unemotional, everything stands out, nothing blends, all subtlety gone, sounds like 20 overdubs all on separate lines being squeezed together to make one artificial picture. Too much top end EQ on everything, no soul, just clinical sound from a mixer (no idea who it is) that decided that "the Beatles need to be brought into the 21st century". The original (mono or stereo) at least has heart and sounds like a "whole" of something. The remix sounds like someone broke a china teacup, glued it together and shone a big light on it. "Hear what I did? I "fixed" this song. It's good now."

"Horrible thing to do to such a classic song."

You be the judge.

For comparison with the previous incarnation of "Penny Lane", here's that:

You'll notice that during the line "he likes to keep his fire engine clean..." they inserted individual short shots of the Beatles faces in this order:
Paul, George, Ringo
The new one goes:
John, Paul, George, Ringo
So the quick shot of John here is new, making this a new edit, however unobtrusive.

Ringo Starr’s former estate is set for demolition

Oligarch to bulldoze Beatles’ £5.8m mansion: Ringo Starr’s six-bed Surrey retreat where John Lennon lived with Yoko Ono will be demolished for new mega-basement home

It was once home to Ringo Starr and John Lennon and even appeared in The Magical Mystery Tour – for decades Sunny Heights has been a place of pilgrimage for fans of The Beatles.
But Starr’s former estate is now set for demolition after being bought by Russian oligarch Vladimir Scherbakov, 55, who wants to bulldoze the famous home and build a new one in its place.
After the drummer bought the Surrey mansion in 1965, it became where band retreated from the public eye. It even had its own bar on site, The Flying Cow, where Starr would play host to his friends away from the limelight.

He bought the mock-Tudor mansion with his then wife Maureen Starkey for just £37,000 ($57,000). Just a short drive from both Lennon’s Kenwood mansion and George Harrison’s Kinfauns estate, it quickly became an important part of life among the Beatles.
One of the scenes from their film The Magical Mystery Tour, when Starr projected images onto George Harrison’s face, was filmed in its extensive gardens. They also used it as the location for photo shoots.
Starr eventually moved out in 1968 and it was briefly called home by Lennon and Yoko Ono, after they sold their nearby Kenwood estate, before it was sold itself the following year. Subsequent owners always appeared to respect the home’s musical legacy until Scherbakov bought it for £5.8million ($9million) in 2013, paying for it in full up-front.
The former deputy prime minister of the Soviet Union, reportedly worth £912million ($1.4billion), has now been granted planning permission by Elmbridge Borough Council to knock down the six-bedroom Sunny Heights and build a new mansion in its place.

The current house is already impressive, boasting its own cinema, swimming pool and library. But this does not seem to be enough for Scherbakov.
He plans to replace it with a sprawling mansion, complete with huge basement and underground swimming pool, wine cellar and gym.
At the end of the Soviet era in 1990, Scherbakov was appointed first deputy prime minister of the USSR and head of its economic planning agency.
He quickly built up his vast fortune. In 1991, after the collapse of the USSR, he founded a company to privatise companies in the former Communist state.
Five years later he set up another company assembling foreign cars, which in 2013 was the second biggest carmaker in Russia.

Did John Lennon Chant 'Let's Go Mets' on a 1972 Song?

Musician David Peel's “The Ballad of New York City," a track from the album "The Pope Smokes Dope," was produced by the Beatle and wife Yoko Ono.

Tom Frangione, the host of Beatles radio show Things We Said Today, is a big Mets fan, so much so that he wants to believe with all his heart that John Lennon contributed to the “Let’s Go Mets” chant that can be heard at the end of musician David Peel’s “The Ballad of New York City," a track from Peel's 1972 album, The Pope Smokes Dope, which Lennon and wife Yoko Ono produced and was released on Apple Records.

But Peel tells Billboard, “Lennon never said that. He never played on any of my songs. It was me and my hippie friends. Everybody who did the chanting was from the Bronx.”

The Mets, who hail from Queens and won the World Series in 1969, were the hot New York baseball team at the time. Even though Peel is a Yankees fan, he said they chanted “Let’s Go Mets” “because the Mets were the underdogs and the Yankees were the capitalists.”

Lennon was in the control room when Peel and his fellow singers belted out the chant, but he didn’t join them. “He didn’t want to upstage me,” Peel recalls. “He did what I wanted to do.”

Lennon and Ono met Peel in 1971 in New York’s Washington Square Park, where he played acoustic guitar and regularly led sing-a-longs. The novelty folk singer had two pot-centric albums on Elektra -- Have a Marijuana (1968) and American Revolution (1970) -- before hooking up with the couple. Lennon and Ono signed him to a one-record deal on Apple, making Peel one of a handful of non-Beatle acts to record on Apple (Mary Hopkin, James Taylor and Badfinger are among the others).

While Peel regrets not having Lennon play or sing on his album, he still revels in the 1972 One-to-One concert at Madison Square during which he performed on stage with the Beatle.

But back to the Mets, who are currently down 2-0 in the World Series against the Kansas City Royals. Was Lennon into sports? “No,” Peel says. “Yoko made sure of that.”
