Destiny 2 players have discovered an Easter egg in the beta that began yesterday, and it's a callback to the roundly panned song Paul McCartney wrote and performed for the first game.
McCartney came aboard for the first Destiny to help with its soundtrack. It was hard not to know this, as several stories preceding the game made mention of it. "Hope for the Future," featuring his vocals, was unofficially called the "Destiny Theme," and it launched as a single alongside the game in 2014. Players could visit the lounge inside the Tower to play the video, and bluntly, they weren't really digging it.
Well, Destiny 2's beta begins with the mission "Homecoming," in which the player has to battle through a Tower under siege. (It’s also the only campaign mission in the beta.) Beside a locked door that would otherwise lead to the lounge, players may linger by the door and hear a warped version of "Hope for the Future."
McCartney worked with longtime Bungie composer Martin O'Donnell, who got sideways with the studio, was fired in early 2014 and later prevailed in an acrimonious legal dispute over compensation he was owed.
It at least seems to be a nod that Destiny 2 won't be concerned with the kind of hype that preceded the launch of the original. Though no one doubts Destiny's popularity or impact since, and its post-release support effectively made it into a different game, the critical response to its launch was underwhelming.
Destiny 2 launches Sept. 6 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It launches Oct. 24 on Windows PC.
