Paul McCartney has rejected an approach from ITV to become a coach on The Voice, NME has learned.
The reality singing contest is moving to ITV from BBC1 for its next series, which will start in 2017. A report from The Sun recently stated that ITV bosses were “desperate” for McCartney to be one of the four coaches.
McCartney’s spokesman was unavailable for comment when approached by NME. But a source close to the singer told NME: “An approach was made, but Paul won’t be doing it.”
Of the most recent series’ coaches, Kaiser Chiefs singer Ricky Wilson and Paloma Faith have already said they won’t be re-appearing. It’s not yet known if Boy George or will.i.am. will be making the transition from BBC1 to ITV, or if presenters Emma Willis and Marvin Humes will be involved.
Robbie Williams and Jennifer Hudson have also been linked with coaching roles on the show, while there has been speculation that Tom Jones will return to the panel despite being sacked by BBC1 following the 2015 series.
The most recent series was won by Kevin Simm, who had previously been a member of Liberty X, who were themselves runners-up in ITV reality pop show Popstars in 2001. Simm’s sole single to date, ‘All You Good Friends’, reached Number 24.
