James McCartney’s new album The Blackberry Train is set to drop tomorrow, May 6th. The album opens with the brightly lit “Too Hard”; the track is anything but too hard. A melodic feel-good rocker, it’s a great opening to the album, grooving along, with a bit of an edgy guitar riff dropped right in the middle. James says about the opening track: “I wrote it in L.A, and tried to infuse it with a country feel to really bring out that desperation, and the idea of trying too hard. Dhani Harrison came into the studio and we both collaborated on the guitar solo in the song.” You can view the video and hear the track here:
A great follow-up to James’ debut album Me, the album has a bit of a harder edge, but continues in the overall feel of the first album. “It’s all been an evolution,” James says. “This set of songs definitely has a harder edge, but it’s a continuation of the last album. The main thing for me is to not conform or compromise.”
The aptly named track “Waterfall” was inspired by memories of his mother. After you listen to the track the second time, if you know the story, you will be moved by the lyrics.
At times both edgy and melodic, the music has a bit of a psychedelic feel, blending indie-rock, alt-rock, feel-good music, and just plain old good melodies and catchy-as-hell hooks.
Some of the material from the album had been debuted in London in late 2015 where he played to a sold-out audience three nights running. Now he is set to embark on a tour in support of the album starting May 10th in San Juan Capistrano at The Coach House. The tour will take him through twenty-five states in just over six weeks, a grueling schedule for any artist. He’s built up a loyal and devoted following through his tours, having gone through the US, UK, and Europe.
His music has been lauded by Rolling Stone, The Boston Globe, The New York Times, and The Daily News, and it’s clear he shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. This train is running at full steam. For full tour information, visit Tour Dates .

James McCartney visits Alex’s Bar in Long Beach

If that guy on stage at Alex’s Bar playing some really good alt-rock and psychedelic music looks really familiar, yet you can’t quite put your finger on it, you’re probably thinking of his dad.
James McCartney, son of Paul – yes of The Beatles – is carrying on the family tradition as he performs at the Long Beach bar on May 11.
James McCartney, who performed a short acoustic set at Coachella back in 2013 four years after his father headlined the festival, is touring in support of his latest album “The Blackberry Train,” released on May 6. The 11-song album includes the first single “Too Hard.”
“I wrote it in L.A, and tried to infuse it with a country feel to really bring out that desperation, and the idea of trying too hard,” McCartney said in a statement.
Alex’s Bar is at 2913 E. Anaheim St., Tickets for the 8 p.m. show are $13-$15 and can be purchased at the door or at www.alexsbar.com.

James McCartney to play Holland Project
By Jordan Berns, Reno.com
May 11, 2016
James McCartney, the son of the Beatles’ Paul McCartney, is making a stop May 13 at the Holland Project in Reno. Opening acts include local bands Crush and Fine Motor. The show runs from 8 to 11 p.m. May 13.
The McCartney name was made famous by the Beatles front man Sir Paul McCartney. However, the music of father and son isn't all that similar. James McCartney’s music is more alternative rock with a hint of psychedelic. His most popular song on Spotify is his rendition of “Old Man” by Neil Young, in which he turns up the tempo and adds wails from an electric guitar, which lends a modern rock sense to the song.
Opening for McCartney is Reno alternative-rock band Crush. The first video on the band’s website is called “Pretty Nothings.” The band consists of three male artists all in their early- to mid-20s. The band has played across the West Coast, opening for bands such as RAC in April 2015 and 3OH!3 in August 2014, as well as playing at Birdland Night Club in New York. In January, Crush signed a licensing agreement with Music Playground for its song “Higher.”
Casey Bell and Dan Morse started Fine Motor in Philadelphia but recently relocated to Reno. Bell and Morse have added two new members to the band, Ben Birkinbine and Chris Mays. They are still early in their careers with none of the band members doing music full time. Bell is working toward a master’s degree in creative writing, and the other band members are professors at the University of Nevada, Reno. Morse and Mays are both in the English department and bass player Ben Birkinbine is a journalism professor. The show will be Fine Motor’s first show with all four band mates, and the band will debut new music.
Tickets are on sale for $10.50 online and $12 at the door.
