Paul McCartney vs. James Hetfield: March Mullet Madness
By Matthew Wilkening
March 22, 2016
Beatles legend Paul McCartney and Metallica frontman James Hetfield have advanced to the elite eight in our highly contested March Mullet Madness battle – but which of their “soccer rockers” gets to move onto the final four?
We’ve lined up 16 of history’s most spectacular mullets and paired them off against each other for a series of tonsorial battles. We’re already down to eight, and will be halving the field every week based on your votes, until only the greatest mullet in rock ‘n’ roll history is left standing.
McCartney’s “party in the back, business up front” hairstyle handily defeated that of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger in his first round battle, while Hetfield’s wild mid-’90s mane edged out the more scholarly late-’80s beaver paddle of his former Lulu collaborator, Lou Reed.
So which of these two high-class Tennessee top hats gets your vote? If you just can’t decide, don’t worry — you can come back and keep voting once an hour between now and when the Round Two polls close on March 28 at 11:59PM ET. Our March Mullet Madness winner will be announced on April 12.
