The Rutles have announced details of a UK tour to take place in May.
The Beatles parody group, which was originally formed as a spoof by Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band man Neil Innes and Monty Python comedian Eric Idle, will play 19 shows starting at Exeter Phoenix on May 7 and wrapping up at Liverpool O2 Academy 2 later in the month (May 31).
The band, jokingly referred to as the Pre-Fab Four, were initially conceived for a sketch in Idle's TV show Rutland Weekend Television. They went on to star in the film All You Need Is Cash, which features a cameo from George Harrison, and released a number of albums.
In a press release co-written by Innes, he revealed that his alter-ego Ron Nasty and drummer John Halsey (known in The Rutles as Barrington Womble) would be the only original members of the group taking part in the shows. "It is hereby agreed that, in as much as two of the Artistes heretofore and informally known as 'The Rutles', 'The Pre-Fab Four' or 'Dirk, Nasty, Stig and Barry', shall be appearing live and in person as 'Themselves' (namely Neil and John)," it says.
"And whilst they are appearing as ‘Themselves’ they do so solemnly and without prejudice hereby undertake to use their best endeavors not to make frivolous use of any former silly name, no matter whomsoever, whatsoever, whenever, for ever and ever.”
