NIAGARA FALLS, ONT. Forty two years after the break up of the greatest band in rock ’n’ roll history, Ringo Starr is still fielding questions about a possible reunion.
The 72-year-old Beatles’ drummer held a musical news conference Wednesday in the Avalon Ballroom of the Fallsview Casino Resort to launch a five-week North American tour with the 13th edition of his All-Starr Band.
Ringo played a few songs with the band, including the Beatles classics Boys and With A Little Help From My Friends, and then took questions from the media.
Paul McCartney is celebrating his 70th birthday on Monday and Ringo was asked if he would get together with the only other surviving member of the Beatles to celebrate and play a couple of songs.
“I know what he’s doing on his birthday and I know what I’m doing on his birthday, and we’re not doing it together,” Ringo replied.
Ringo noted that McCartney performed with him at his own 70th birthday party two years ago in New York’s Radio City Music Hall, but that wouldn’t happen again this year.
“I did the Radio City Music Hall thing for mine,” Ringo said. “But Paul has his own plans.”
Ringo’s current All-Starr Band includes Todd Rundgren, Steve Lukather (Toto), Gregg Rolie (Santana, Journey), Mark Rivera (Billy Joel), Richard Page (Mr. Mister) and drummer Greg Bissonette, a member of Starr’s band since 2008.
The tour gets under way Thursday night with a performance at the Avalon Ballroom.
Ringo, who has been rehearsing with the band in Niagara Falls for the past week, has launched two other tours at the Fallsview Casino Resort, one in 2008 and another in 2010.
“We love Niagara Falls,” Ringo said. “We see the falls out of our (hotel room’s) window. “It puts me in my place every morning … It outsizes me.”
