Liverpool’s Cavern Club marks 50th anniversary of Brian Epstein discovering The Beatles
Jon Keats finishes off Brian Epstein's name on the Cavern Club wall
FAB Four fans were today coming together to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Brian Epstein discovering The Beatles.
The Cavern Club was today hosting a tribute to the gifted entrepreneur who helped Beatlemania sweep the globe.
The event was due to feature live music and the unveiling of a new Cavern backdrop featuring Epstein and some of the Merseybeat acts taken under his wing.
It needed a last-minute repaint after his name was initially spelled “Epstien”.
An engraved brick was also placed in the Mathew Street Wall Of Fame yesterday, immortalising Epstein alongside bands who have played the venue over the decades.
Jon Keats, of the Cavern, said: “We decided to mark the enormous legacy of Brian Epstein in the history of The Beatles.
“His involvement marked the beginning of things really starting to move for the band.
“He saw the excitement they could bring to a crowd of young people in a sweaty cellar, recognising their potential straight away.”
Epstein became The Beatles’ manager after catching their performance at one of the Cavern’s lunchtime shows.
As the owner of record store NEMS, the budding svengali was already well-versed in Liverpool’s music scene.
Jon said: “Epstein had heard of The Beatles and decided to find out what they were like.
“Much to his embarrassment, the DJ spotted him and announced his arrival over the speaker. He stuck out like a sore thumb in his smart suit.”
The Cavern was due to recreate the spirit of the Swinging Sixties today, with live acts playing Beatles hits as visitors descended its steps.
Jon said: “We are bringing back the fun of that famous lunchtime slot. We would like people to head down on their lunch, just like they used to.”
The event was starting at 1pm today.
