For the tour, the former Beatle has joined forces with multi-instrumentalist Edgar Winter and lead singer of 1980s band Mr Mister, Richard Page.

He said he was drawn to performing in Mexico because of conversations with fellow Beatle Sir Paul McCartney.

"Paul is forever talking about Mexico and I'm looking forward to the lighters, I'm looking forward to the joy and I'm looking forward to the peace and love.

"We come on, we have a good time and we hope every night that the audience has a good time too," he said.

After the Mexico City concert, Starr and his band will perform in Chile's capital of Santiago and Buenos Aires followed by seven concerts in Brazil including Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.

He said that events in the Middle East had just reconfirmed his commitment to spreading a message of peace and love.

"It's still a dream of mine and one day it can happen, I'm not going to give up on that," he said.
