Keenly aware that a lavish wedding does not always herald a happy marriage, Sir Paul McCartney has modest ambitions for his union with Nancy Shevell.
Mandrake hears that the former Beatle is to marry the American divorcée in a quiet ceremony in London with only close members of his family present.
The couple will then fly to New York, where they will hold a party for friends and members of Shevell’s family.
“Paul loves Nancy very much, but does not want a big wedding,” says a friend of the 69-year-old musician.
He married his second wife, Heather Mills, 43, in an expensive ceremony in the grounds of Castle Leslie in Ireland in 2002. Three hundred guests, including the Beatles’ drummer Ringo Starr, attended the wedding, which involved thousands of pounds’ worth of flowers, and a five-minute firework display. Security guards had prevented photographers from stealing a glimpse of the preparations.
The couple separated four years later. Mills was awarded £24.3 million by a judge as part of her settlement when the couple divorced amid much acrimony in 2008. The settlement equated to £17,000 for every day of their marriage.
In May, Sir Paul proposed to Shevell, 51, with a vintage Cartier engagement diamond ring. She was previously married for more than 20 years to Bruce Blakeman, a lawyer, with whom she has a son, Arlen, 19. Sir Paul’s spokesman says the details are “speculation”, but declines to comment further.
