¿Paul McCartney viene a Córdoba?

On the cusp of superstardom (and living it up in Weston-super-Mare): Beatles fan's unseen photos of the Fab Four having fun in the sun

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER
24th February 2012

These previously unseen photos show the Beatles having not such a Hard Day’s Night but relaxing in a seaside hotel in 1963, just months before their global rise to fame.
In one shot the Fab Four are seen sun bathing topless on the terrace - except for John Lennon who is still donning a dark waistcoat and shirt. In the background a pasty-looking gentleman is sunbathing in his underpants, oblivious to his famous neighbours.
In another Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney take afternoon tea out of china cups as a group of old ladies sit in armchairs nearby.
A third picture shows the group relaxing on deck chairs with Ringo waving and the fourth shows George Harrison sharing a pot of tea with a friend.

The candid photos were taken at a hotel in Weston Super Mare, Somerset, by schoolboy Bruce Leak then aged 11 who was on a family holiday with his parents and sister.
The family spoke to John Lennon, then 23, Paul, then 21, George, then 20, and Ringo, then 23, while they ate their breakfast at the hotel.
The band had just had a UK number one single with Please Please Me and an album hit with the same title. Just months earlier they had signed to Parlophone Records and were spending the year touring around British towns, playing in Margate, Leeds and Yarmouth, and were gaining popularity. As they arrived in Weston-super-mare, on the other side of the pond a U.S. LP was being released called Introducing the Beatles.
Despite getting the amazingly candid pictures of the Beatles before they hit the big time, Bruce kept his amazing snaps in a drawer for decades - thinking that they were ‘rubbish’ and ‘worth nothing.’
When he passed away last year aged 59, his sister, Ann O’Neill, 73, inherited them and decided to auction them off in the hope that they will fall into good hands.

Mrs O’Neill, from Wigan, Greater Manchester, said: ‘My brother had the pictures for years but thought that they were a load of rubbish and they were worth nothing.
‘But when he passed away in February last year I inherited them. I thought it such a shame to throw them away but they are too much of a reminder of my brother to keep them.’

Ann’s mum Edith is in two of the pictures. 'She is walking out the door in one and the other she is sitting with them at breakfast,' said Ann.
‘She said they were very friendly and chatty and looked very relaxed like they didn’t have a care in the world, but this was before their fame grew.’
The siblings remained big Beatles fans and Bruce had some of their music played at his funeral.
The photographs are to be auctioned on tomorrow at Omega Auctions in Stockport, Greater Manchester, are expected to make up to £400.
Paul Fairweather, an auctioneer at Omega, said: ‘We have estimated for the set of four photos a value of £300-400 because they are quite candid pictures we think that they will go for more than others of their kind.
‘The most interesting one is the one of all four of them where they are sat outside; John is reading and the others are sat with their shirts off.

‘They look really relaxed not worrying about anything unlike in later years when they couldn’t go anywhere without being hounded. It was a rare chance for them to take in the sunshine.
‘It was in 1963 around the Please Please Me era, right in the beginning of their fame. They had been playing for about six months I think at this time.
‘Brian Epstein signed them to Parlaphone at the end of 1962 so I guess they would have been down to London before then but you can see that they are still young and fresh faced.’
As well as the photographs, an 8mm film of the Beatles 1963 tour which was donated by another collector is going under the hammer.

Meanwhile a series of events are being unveiled today in the Beatles’ home town to celebrate 50 years since the band’s formation.
John Lennon, Paul McCartney and George Harrison were joined in August 1962 by drummer Ringo Starr, who replaced Pete Best, to become the Fab Four.

Two months later their first single Love Me Do was released and Beatlemania swept across the world.
Liverpool Council will unveil plans for a series of anniversary events today at the city’s Cavern Club.
The highlights include International Beatles Week, in August, which will mark the 50th anniversary with music and fans from all over the world descending on the city.
Tribute gigs, guest speakers and the world’s biggest Beatles convention will all take place.
Further concert performances will take place on Love Me Do Weekend in October and thousands are expected to attend a peace vigil in December on the 32nd anniversary of Lennon’s murder.
There will also be stage shows at the city’s Epstein Theatre, named in honour of Beatles manager Brian Epstein, and performances by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra.

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Star Club

Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Star Club

Press Release

On April 14th and 15th, BEATLEMANIA celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Star‐Club
There are places and names within the world of music which lead to all sorts of associations – Woodstock is one of them, Abbey Road, maybe even Graceland and
Live Aid. Certainly, the Star Club is to be found among these catch words. During spring 1962 the club opened in the ‘Große Freiheit’ centred at the red light district where it rose to fame of being the holy mecca of beat music, a magical place of pop culture and becoming one of the most famous live‐clubs of the sixties. The orange‐red posters for the opening night were promising “Die Not hat ein Ende” – ’Misery is over` – the Star Club kept its word: The Beatles, Roy Young, The Bachelors and ‘Tex Roberg & The Graduates’ played at the opening – and during the following months and years almost every top musician within the world of Rock’n’Roll came to play at the venue, among them Chuck Berry, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bill Haley, Little Richard, Ray Charles, the Everly Brothers, Fats Domino, Brenda Lee and many more. Finally the post‐war youth was offered a place which wasn’t dominated by the music of their parents or even grand‐parents.
The Star Club was Hamburg’s jewel which put the city to the worldwide centre of attention of Rock’n’Roll.

The 13th of April 2012 is the Star Club’s 50th anniversary – obviously such a special occasion will be celebrated in style. In cooperation with the ‘Große Freiheit 36’, the BEATLEMANIA Hamburg has prepared a weekend in the name of music and art.
Friday:
Friday is entirely packed with Live‐music: The ‘Große Freiheit 36’ presents bands throughout the whole evening who all have a special connection to the club or even played the venue back in the day. The Line up includes The Quarrymen, The Pete Best Band, Mike Pender’s Searchers, The Mojos, The Undertakers, Lee Curtis with the Bonds and Mr.Piggi, Jimmy & The Rackers, Rockhouse Brothers, Ian’s Zodiacs, Ticket to Ride and the ‘Star Club All‐Star‐Band’.

Saturday:
Saturday and Sunday will continue with a loaded jubilee programme in the halls of the BEATLEMANIA. The popular TV and radio host Carlo von Tiedemann will start Saturday at 12 pm with the opening of the exhibition ‘People at the Star Club´ – drawings by Klaus‐Dieter Schweitz. Contemporary witness Schweitz has portrayed all different kinds of personalities of the 60’s – whether it is a doorman, a bar lady or John Lennon – and as a result presents an artistical document of history about the heritage of Rock’n’Roll in Hamburg.

Moreover a charity auction starts to support the Hamburg charitable society Clubkinder e.V. and one of Schweitz’s drawings will be sold on auction till Sunday. Interested parties can leave their bids directly at BEATLEMANIA or compete in the bidding online via www.beatlemaniahamburg.com and via www.clubkinder.de.

Afterwards, the successful audio‐book series ‘Hamburg‐Krimis’ guest stars in the BEATLEMANIA – showing excerpts from the live‐staging of their brand new audio‐book ‘Todesengel Reeperbahn’. The story involves one of The Beatles famous musicians being under suspicion of murder and showcases the Star Club as an essential location.

Less homicidal but none the less exciting will be the reading of Horst Fascher, former Star Club manager and Beatles‐companion, who will please the crowd with extracts from his book ‘Let The Good Times Roll’.

The Hamburg Beatles‐guides band ‘Die Koschmiders’ will enter the stage to (re‐)interpret the biggest hits as well as some less famous pearls of Beatles music history – which will all take place during a live performance in the Yeah Club of the BEATLEMANIA.

On the fifth floor, the BEATLEMANIA continuously shows the film ‘All You Need Is Klaus’. Subject of the screening is the life of Klaus Voormann, who, as no other German, has experienced the rise and fame of the legendary pop era first‐hand.

Sunday:
To ease up the tired bones, the BEATLEMANIA calls out for ‘Let’s Rock’n’Roll’. To participate in the dance‐workshops, given by the ADTV dance school ‘Die Schrittmacher’, is highly recommended and expressively desired!

A treat in form of a very special premiere is given to the audience in the Yeah Club: Before the 55‐minutes‐long audio‐book ‘Beat! Beat! Beat! Or: How the Lobscouse hit the Leslie’ will be broadcasted for the first time via the station NDR Info at 21.05 that Sunday, you will be able to listen to it at the BEATLEMANIA. The audio‐book combines true and adapted stories based on the beginnings and the best years of the Star Club.

Additionally, the poster exhibition ‘Star‐Club in 3D’ will offer a new glimpse into the cult club and a signing session with Horst Fascher is scheduled.

Also during the Sunday, it’s time again to push the music button. Dara and Band, who acclaimed fame far beyond Hamburg’s borders as backing group for Tony Sheridan, offer Star‐Club‐Sound that would do anyone proud. And as previously done on Saturday, the 5th floor will be transformed into a cinema where between 10am and 7pm continuously the documentary ‘Bye Bye Star‐Club’ will be screened. This search of clues is lead by moviemaker Axel Engstfeld and Günter Zint, once ‘Star Clubs’ own photographer.

NB: Programme is subject to change

Who only can clear their schedule for one day and still don’t want to miss the BEATLEMANIA programme is welcome to purchase a day ticket for € 12 (price per adult).

KISSES ON THE BOTTOM on the world charts

www.examiner.com
McCartney's 'Kisses' run sweet and light in second week on world charts
Steve Marinucci

Beatles Examiner
FEBRUARY 23, 2012

There's good news and bad news on the world's music charts for Paul McCartney and his "Kisses on the Bottom" album.
That was especially true in the U.S., where the latest Billboard chart numbers for the week of March 3 were released Thursday.  On the Jazz Albums Chart, where the album, which shot to the top spot on that chart last week in its second week, it remained at #1 this week, its third week on that chart.
McCartney is in distinguished company there. Hot on his album's heels at #2 is Tony Bennett's "Duets II," which is rebounding back up from the #3 position the previous week. And right below Tony Bennett is a Frank Sinatra retrospective, "Sinatra: Best of the Best," which, at #2 last week, is trading places with Bennett this week.
The news isn't as good for McCartney on the Billboard 200, where "Kisses on the Bottom" dropped from #5 to #7 in its second week on that chart. The album also dropped from #5 to #6 on the U.S. music watcher Hits Daily Double chart, #5 to #24 on the Digital Albums Chart and #2 to #3 on the Tastemaker Albums Chart. A label spokesman attributed the  movement to the significant chart gains made by Whitney Houston's albums after her death and the current popularity of Adele.

But there were successes, too, on several European charts. On Australia's ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association) chart, it jumped 10 places from #25 to #15. On the Belgian Flanders chart, it jumped from #46 to #8, while on the Belgian Wallonia chart, it jumped from #45 to #6. On the Swedish Sverigetopplistan chart, it jumped to #8 from #29. On Italy's FIMI chart, it debuted at #15

But in the Netherlands, it dropped from #10 to #11 on the Dutch Media Markt album top 40.  It also dropped to #12 on the UK Official Album Chart from #3 in its second week. However, in Canada, it held to its #4 spot.

Friends to meet in Los Angeles to wish George happy birthday
Posted by Adam Forrest on Thursday, 02/23/12

This Saturday, George Harrison would have been 69 years old. A few friends, including Beatles news personality Gillian Lomax and myself, Adam Forrest, are going to meet up at "The George Harrison Tree" up at Griffith Park Observatory in Los Angeles on Saturday afternoon to remember George and wish him "Happy Birthday".

On February 22, 2004, the City of Los Angeles declared it George Harrison day and unveiled this plaque at a ceremony attended by George's friend Jackie Lomax, who played a song he wrote as a tribute to George, "Friend Of Mine."

For those of us in Los Angeles, George's tree is sort of like our Strawberry Fields in New York City where fans meet to remember John. Many fans meet to remember George at his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, but George's tree is a quieter place fans can come together and reflect in a natural atmosphere that George would have really liked.

George's tree is at the very tip of the north end of the Griffith Observatory parking lot. Here is a satellite view of the location of George's tree up at Griffith Observatory. Here is a Google Map to the location.

We will meet at George's tree this Saturday, February 25, at 2:00 pm. If you're in the area, I hope we'll see you there.

Diana Krall talks about her collaboration with Sir Paul McCartney

Diana Krall talks about her collaboration with Sir Paul McCartney.

Published on 19/02/2012

Diana Krall has worked on Kisses on the Bottom, the latest album from Paul McCartney, which revisits some old American jazz standards. Talking exclusively to The Express, she told us about her collaboration. She hates talking. Which is not very convenient for even a simple phone conversation. Diana Krall lives in the United States, her house is lost in the countryside with her twins. And she's not very keen on doing some promo for the album.
Surprise: she does not hide his enthusiasm for working on Sir Paul McCartney's new jazz album made with the help of Eric Clapton and Stevie Wonder. There's worse as travel companions. And even on the phone, his pleasure is clearly visible.

How did the idea of the meeting between the former Beatle and you, a jazz singer come about ?

Paul dreamed of a jazz album for twenty years. We have the same producer, Tommy LiPuma: Tommy gave us the opportunity to talk. From our meeting, the project took shape. The idea was to work with Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder and jazz musicians. But each of us was to embody a role he never played. Result: Paul sings jazz and does not touch any instrument, Stevie Wonder and I do not sing and he plays the harmonica, I'm at the piano.

All American standards included on the record are as beautiful as little known. Who chose them?

Paul McCartney did. He loves famous authors such as Cole Porter, but what he wanted most was to resume the jazz songs that made him listen to his father in Liverpool. It turns out that among these pieces, he thought only they know, many were songs that my grandfather adored and with whom I grew up. Paul also told me that these standards have inspired several tracks he wrote with John Lennon. For example, "Home (When Shadows Fall)," Paul has played with the Quarrymen and The Beatles, between 1957 and 1960.

On Kisses on the Bottom, you play, you have made all the arrangements, and the line-up is all the musicians who accompany you forever now. Finally, who was the boss?

Nobody, really. Each has brought his own musical background. I wanted eclectic musicians. They all played with artists as diverse as Betty Carter, Erykah Badu, Joni Mitchell and Herbie Hancock. Paul also gave me the opportunity to confront myself with an extraordinary guitarist, Eric Clapton. I love this guy. He is even more autistic than me! We all had a common language and arrangements came naturally. I wrote them live: most songs on this album were recorded in one or two takes.

On this album, Paul McCartney's voice is almost unrecognizable ...

It is different, it's true. On this record, it has something vulnerable, feminine, broken. It looks like something out of a vinyl post-1940s. Paul singing into a microphone that was used by Nat King Cole. I played and I had chills listening to this melancholy, this fragility. And then, on some tracks, like "My Valentine", he wrote for the record, his voice became blues, powerful like a crooner. He told me he was not sure whether to improvise: this is not true. He returned these songs in all directions.

Do you think that Paul McCartney is a jazz musician?

It is Paul McCartney: a musician who has always composed music with complex structures. At the time of the Beatles, he influenced many jazz musicians: Duke Ellington, Count Basie, who took over "Michelle" and "Help!" - Or Ella Fitzgerald, whose interpretation of "Something in the Way She Moves" is sublime. I myself recorded "For No One", Paul McCartney, on my last album, Quiet Nights. Who would have imagined one day that I would join him on piano?

You can find the app in the iTunes Store ,
or visit GeorgeHarrison.com to view the trailer.
The Guitar Collection: George Harrison brings the musician's private guitar collection to life through photographs, detailed descriptions, audio, and video footage. For the first time, with the help of unique 360° imaging by photographer Steven Sebring, fans can see the scratches, dings, and worn threads on the guitars. The history of each guitar is laid out in great detail, including the origin of the guitar, when and how it became part of Harrison's collection, modifications he made to it and why each was so important in creating his distinctive sound. Accompanying audio and recordings from Harrison himself as he introduces many of the guitars and plays sections of songs, allow the user to appreciate the personalities of each instrument.

The app features a number of Harrison's best known guitars, including:
  • the Gretsch G6128 Duo Jet
  • the Gibson J-160E
  • the Rickenbacker 360/12
  • the Fender Stratocaster named 'Rocky'
  • the Ramirez Classical, the Fender Rosewood Telecaster
  • the Zemaitis Lotus 12-String
  • Additional guitars will be added to the app in the future.
Also featured is video with Ben Harper, Josh Homme, Mike Campbell, and Dhani Harrison, each playing and showcasing the guitars and exploring their feel and tone. Conan O'Brien and Dhani discuss what make these guitars so exceptional, and guitar great Gary Moore shares his views on what made George Harrison such a distinctive and influential guitar player. The Guitar Collection: George Harrison app comes via BANDWDTH Publishing and the George Harrison Estate, and is available  in the iTunes App Store.
